Smells like promised citrus flavors, including grapefruit and orange, and the taste starts with a burst of citrus flavors, but the finish isn't quite as good and the beer tastes a touch too sweet, even for a DIPA. As I much as I like citra hops, this is nowhere near as good as Hop Juju, Head Shrinker, or Columbus's DIPAs for that matter. A very good beer, but it doesn't quite match up to Madtree's Galaxy High.

Poured from a growler into a Goose Island tulip. Nice golden-amber color with a couple fingers of creamy white head. The beer is slightly clear with just a touch of haze. The nose really cranks out those wonderful citrus notes of oranges, grapefruit, lemon, and over-ripe peaches.

Medium-full body with a very smooth, creamy feel and a wallop of a hoppy bite. Brief biscuity notes up front with a hint of marmalade before the hops take over. Tons of grapefruit, mandarin orange, and rye-like pepperiness march across your palate, but there's plenty of malt to provide balance and body. The beer has quite a nice feel to it, coating your mouth with all that oily, hoppy goodness and providing a lasting finish. I get no booziness at all with this beer, but I do get loads of hops and a return of that marmalade-like sweetness on the finish. Very dry and appetizing, yet extremely drinkable.

I find that the body of Citra single-hop beers tends to be a bit on the thin side (Zombie Dust excluded, of course). None of that here. This stuff is like concentrated Zombie Dust. I'm surprised I don't see bits of hop leaf floating around the glass (and I wouldn't object if I did). I just wish MadTree would start canning their IIPAs like Galaxy High and THIS. I would love to be able to share them with my trading partners in something other than a growler. This is a really, really good IIPA.

Exceptional DIPA. The alcohol bite, although not overpowering, is noticeable. The brew bursts with flavor and aroma. I have not yet tried their Galaxy High, but am now eager with anticipation. Mad Tree continues to show it is one of the preeminent brewers in the region.

In high celebration of the sexiest hop on the planet, the brewers at MadTree slather a strong and hoppy beer with the perfume, taste and bitterness of the Citra hops for a recipe that's sure to exude excellence.

Citra High pours a deep amber haze that's topped with a creamy off white froth. The promised scent of citronella brings tangerine, grapefruit and tropical scents to the forefront with a quick follow of herb, hemp and grass. Honey, caramel and cashew align for the malty sweet taste of graham cracker.

And then the hops explode on the middle palate as the sweetness starts to lift and the radiant character of Citra hops deliver a wallop of mandarin orange, clementine, red grapefruit, mango and passionfruit to the tastebuds. Fresh spruce, grass clippings and a collection of botanical herbs round the finish with lemon verbena, cannabis and sassafras fragrant spices in tow.

Medium bodied and trending dry and bitter as the taste moves along, the finish is crisp, clean and refreshing despite the beer's impressive strength. A long and bitter aftertaste is spicy, grassy and pleasantly dank for a session that suggests a high rate of drinkability and deceptively smooth.

Finally in cans; dated 4/27/15, consumed 4/30. The citrusy nose signals serious hops ahead, but they aren't there. It's not terribly hoppy, and the finish is smooth and drops off the table. Given that it clocks in at 10.2% that could be scary by the end of a 4-pack.

canned on 4/27, drinking 4/30.
If danky grapefruit wasn't a flavor or a scent... it is now. This stuff is delicious.

I am sorry. I couldn’t find anything wrong. Fresh, raw, bitter. This is a Heady Topper clone. I find Heady to be a tad more herbal and a little heavier on grapefruit but this is extremely enjoyable. So drinkable. It just disappears at 9.5% and 120ibu. Fantastic.

This is a huge citrusy and hoppy DIPA that has a strong malt backbone to handle all of the citra. A big body that coats the palate. I definitely prefer this over the Galaxy High although both are very good beers. I can't wait to try more Mad Tree brews

Fantastic aromas . . . The beer starts out good but slowly turns boozy and syrupy. Thought the same thing about Galaxy High as well. I like it would probably drink this again but am turn off by the second half of this beer.

I tried this at the brewery. It poured a clear golden with white head that left a nice lace. The scent had citrus peel notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with citrus presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it was a excellent beer.
