Usually a variant on the raspberry, the boysenberry seems to trend a little more tart and carry a slightly more pectin peppery bite. In which case, the brewers at Mad Tree take the European berry and put them in a European beer -the witbier to be more specific.
Pale mauve and projecting a translucent glow, the fruit influence is strong right at the pour. As a light and broken froth builds, the scent of the fruit immediately commands attention. Natural perfumes of citrus and spice help to round the scent before a bready and moderately sweet malt taste of pastry, hard candy and a splash of honey take the early lead in taste.
As the flavors come together, the tartness of the berries begin to win out and take the ale to the slight sour side. Sweetness fades and the fruit character, both natural and added, bring a sangria sensation with orange, raspberry, cranberry, grape, apple and cherry taste to the forefront. A light spice of clove, peppercorn and white wine decorate the finish along with a mild straw-like bitterness.
Medium light on the palate, the early breadiness easily relinquishes to dryness and a playful acidity that work in tandem to create a crisp, refreshing and highly drinkable session to easily replace lemonade as a front porch sipper.

Pours a blended color of purple and gold with a slight haze to it. Smells mostly of berries and belgian yeast. It's flavor is outstanding. Tons of berry flavors, yet still tasting like a great belgian pale. It's mouthfeel and carbonation are top notch. Extremely high drinkability. The berries taste real, not like some artificial junk. I'm not even much of a berry fan (especially when it comes to beer), but this one tastes outstanding. I'd love to see it on draft year-round.

Had on tap at Mad Tree.
Pours a dark reddish purple with a frothy off white head. Smell was not huge, yeasty up front with some fruit notes. The taste was nice, tart fruitiness from the boysenberry with a good yeast profile. Yet nothing overpowering and a good balance of flavor. Light bodied, and smooth, a refreshing beer. Overall a nice fruit beer, the fruit doesn't blast at you and it doesn't taste artificial. I enjoyed this one.

On tap at South Park Tavern. Served in a Tulip glass.
Appearance: Cloudy to hazy pale red-purple color. Thin pale pink dense head, plenty of lacing.
Smell: Hint of berries and a bit of yeast. Not a lot of aroma.
Taste: A bit of a base Belgian Pale Ale with bitterness from start to finish. This is accented with a tart berry flavor from start to finish as well. An interesting fruit-infused BPA.
Mouthfeel: A little thin, but sticky on the teeth. Light carbonation.
Overall / Drinkability: Unusual to pair a berry flavor with a BPA. Well, unusual to me anyway. Yes, it is common with Lambics but not with a hoppy BPA where the malt and the yeast bring all the flavor. In this case the malt and yeast flavors are tamped down by the berry flavor. It’s there, just not very prominent. Not something I would have a lot of, but good to try. Refreshing with a nice berry accent, but I’m not completely sold on it. But it is good, just not very BPA in character.

Beautiful color. Pink/purple clear. Smells sweet. The boysen berries work so well with this beer

I could drink this all day. The color is beautiful. A dark red/purple. Sweet and sour at the same time. Smell isn't strong but the faint smell is sweet. Bitter at the end with the Boysen htting at the end.

A pretty unique color with this beer. Deep plum almost purple with a interestelong glow. Aromas have an almost authentic Belgian thing going on but quickly gives way to the berry that overpowers the nose. Taste is deffenitly witbier . . . Wheat and boysenberry. Overall a decent refreshing summer fruit flavored wheat beer.
