Completely dark with a cocoa brown head that clung to the sides. Coffee, chocolate, bourbon, oak. Taste follows the nose with a fantastic balance. Truly a fine BA stout.

Bomber at share, 2015 vintage. Near black pour with a thin beige head. Aroma is roast malts and toffee with bourbon. Taste doesn't deviate for the nose, offering boozy roasty malts with a light, sweet edge.

2015 bottling
Appearance: Pours with a very bubbly tan head that layers a thin cap on top of the espresso brown liquid; splatters of lacing around the chalice
Smell: Very sweet chocolate and caramel tones tinged with Bourbon; hint of black licorice and molasses
Taste: Caramel and chocolate forward, with brown sugar, molasses and licorice tinged sweet tones growing; booze filled Bourbon infiltrates the mid-palate, though there is less than expected oak and vanilla here as they are masked by the sweet flavors
Mouthfeel: Full bodied and creamy with low to moderate carbonation; warmth in the gullet
Overall: I am clearly in the minority here but I find the sweetness of this brew overbearing and the Bourbon doesn't bring the complexity it should

Miller's Toll is essentially black at SRM 35+. A thin, creamy black walnut head quickly forms a ring, leaving a thick coating of fine lace on an Offero glass. Each sip layers on a viscous film.
Deep roasted dark chocolate heightens notes of espresso. The smooth Bourbon is a decadent accent, followed by molasses cookies and rich pumpernickel bread. Other aromas include touches of orange, raisins, prunes, and vanilla. Throughout, there was a light charred smoke that is accentuated by warmth. Warmth also brings out faint tartness and sweet balsamic vinegar.
Surprisingly sweet dark chocolate and coconut is followed by espresso. Fig, raisin and vanilla play against a backdrop of Bourbon and light alcohol. Warmth clarifies the flavors while again bringing out light smokiness. The finish is mild and quick, returning a faint, lingering fruity expression.
A smooth silky texture plays against faint prickly carbonation and well controlled alcohol. The body is dense and chewy.
This is one of those unexpected surprises. I aged it six months and it shines on a hot Summer day spent reading under a shady corner of the yard. One can imagine it would easily elevate ice cream or a mild cigar.
A huge thank you to Meghann and Wayne.

2016 edition, which has a similar label but only refers to the name as "The Toll." Pours like syrupy murk, with a half-finger of cocoa brown foam that dissipates over the next minute. Smells richly of dark chocolate with contrasting notes of anise, smoke, and herbal botanicals--very attractive. The first sip follows that same trajectory, but later tastes open up some new flavors, with more prominent char and bitter hop character. The barrel character is subdued, with only hints of bourbon spice coming through periodically as the beer warms. Mouthfeel is velvety, really pleasant as an evening sipper.
