Clouds grow dark, the wind picks up, a chill sets in -- the weather is not looking good. Thankfully, our winter seasonal OMINOUS is the perfect beer for this situation. Warming from the inside out, it’s a good reason to stay indoors. At 7.5% abv, this Midwest Warmer has layers to stand up to the most frigid of winter nights or rain-soaked spring days. American, English and Belgian malts come together to satisfy the soul with a rich, nutty, roasted flavors. Dark candi sugar brings out hints of dates, raisins, plum and chocolate. OMINOUS is a dark storm of a beer - big, intense and something to keep your eye on.

Very dark brown with red tint. Two fingers of head forms and settles to a thick cap. Very little lacing sticks to the glass.

The aroma consists of bready, caramel, and slightly nutty malt with hints of cocoa and candied sugar. Hops seem to be earthy with a slightest touch of pine.

Malty and earthy flavor. I wonder what yeast they used. Seems to be an American yeast. I would of preferred a British yeast that would of given more esters and buttery flavor. The candied sugar is tasted besides just bumping up the ABV. Get some nutty and chocolate notes.

Nice carbonation along with being medium bodied. Nicely coats the palate while still having active, lively feel. The use of oats probably helped a lot in this category.

Rather boring beer from Bad Weather as most American winter warmers generally are. Nice they did not wassail it but it could use a bit of boost from something other than the malt and sugar.

Appearance: Pours a dark color with a slight red hue. Minimal clarity with a ruby hue. A strong tan head. SRM of 22. (4.00)

Aroma: Strong aromas of rich dark malt. Cocoa upfront, followed by a molasses, plug, berry, possibly fig aroma. Then more scotch and molasses, and maple syrup. A strong cocoa presence amidst the dark malt with a mild roast presence underneath the malts. (4.00)

Flavor: Flavor follows with cocoa upfront. But this fades quickly into a sticky and sweet dark malt. Flavors of rich, maple syrup, molasses, scotch, honey, dark berry. Finishes sweet and sticky like syrup, but the flavor is best at the front rather than the end. Not as roasty as the nose, but finishes quite sweet as expected with the syrup. (3.75)

Feel: Medium-bodied. Lower carbonation. Finishes sweet. (3.50)

Compared to Surly's Scrillionnaire 12/30/20: Pours a darker color with a stronger and darker head. Darker aromas/flavors. More cocoa, dark fruit, molasses. Less honeyflower, white bread/sugar. Similar sweetness.

Compared to Hinterland Maple Bock 1/2023: Pours darker, larger head. Stronger aromas. More sweet caramel and maple syrup. Less brown bread, toast, nuts. Heavier and sweeter.

Overall: A delicious malty beer from Bad Weather Brewing. Listed here as a Strong Ale, but described as a double brown ale, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. This beer has nice and dark malt aromas/flavors as described by others. Mostly cocoa upfront that dissolves into a sticky and sweet dark malt. The roast is no match for the malts and so it finishes malty and sweet as it should. Sort of reminds me of Founder's Dirty Bastard. If I find this one again, I might do a comparison. A quality beer here. (Final Rating: 3.90)

Poured from a 12oz can into glass. Stamped on bottom of can is '12-19-16', but bottle shop selling tag has the date of '1/23/2017'.
Clear ruby brown colored body. Three finger khaki head with aggressive pour, settles to thick cap. Some spots and strings of lacing.
Aroma of dark roasted malts, dark fruit, and sweet candi sugar.
Taste of nutty roasted malts, with dark fruit such as dates and plum, and a touch of dark chocolate.
Smooth, medium mouth feel.
A tasty brown ale with dark fruit aspects.

yeah. i could get used to this one.

poured from a can, not too cold, into a glass. dark, dark brown.

definitely sweet. the ever-popular dark fruit shows up in this one - dried cherries but also fig. i like what someone said downstairs in terms of banana bread, too.

strong but not boozy. thick but not clingy.

a++++ would buy again.

Clear deep garnet color. Light sweet caramel malt aromas, and sticky tree fruit. Also slightly bitter to the nose. Bready and caramel malt throughout, dates and sticky tree fruit, and a slightly mild bitter aftertaste. Can feel the alcohol vaporization in the body.

Aroma and flavor of caramel, chocolate and dark fruits. The finish has some spicy, floral hops and a titch of walnut. Fairly full body with a surprisingly dry finish. Nice stronger version of a traditional Brown.
