Alpine AleAlpine Ale
Notes: Our namesake ale represents everything a good, well balanced pale ale should be: malty but not too sweet, refreshing but not too bitter, full-bodied but not too heavy, lively but not over carbonated. A clean, everyday beer that leaves your palate begging for more. 1.054 OG 32 IBU

Extra pale and with a sharp and citrusy balance, Alpine's flagship IPA is lighter on the palate than more classic versions and is friendly with food, drinkable enough to quench the thirst, yet characterful enough to garner praise from the most dedicated craft beer enthusiast in a stand-alone session.

Light of copper and amber, its honey hues capture a modest haze while casting forth a creamy short foam stance. While its scent is tightly woven of light biscuit and citrus, its taste is smooth and elegant with off-caramel, nutty, toasty malt flavor.

With the middle opening up, the sweeter side of balance is caught somewhere between honey and caramel but with a creamy nougat center with biscuit and apricot; giving the taste a marzen-like softness. As the hops rise to balance the sweetness, it brings its own citrusy character. Pink grapefruit, slightly under-ripened orange and a light herbal taste develops into a sprucy and lightly resinous bittering.

Remaining even-keel in balance, the beer's medium-light body is playfully starchy, creamy and supple in sweetness. Though trending dry and refreshing, the hops offer a slight shadow over the malts with its acute and moderate bitterness in finish. Trailing with soft pine resins and citrus peel, the aftertaste shows a confident hop tilt.

Pours moderate orange in color with just a pencil of head. Slightly cloudy. Nose is yeasty with a bit of citrus lurking. Flavor is extremely balanced with sweet citrus and malt apparent first on the palate and slightly earthly hoppy bitterness on the back. Interesting in that it kind of harkens back to a pre huge citrus west coast IPA era. Don't get me wrong, the citrus is here, it is just not as in-your-face as you typically see these days. Very nice. Clean and refreshing finish.

The lower ratings on this one surprise me. Nice bright hop characteristics burst from the glass. Some tropical fruits and citric notes with a light grassy flavor. Low bitterness and very easy to drink. I would have thought this was an easy drinking IPA if I didn't know better.

A-Clear well carbonated amber, one finger head that leaves some lacing.

S-Rather malty, caramel, straw, what, not much in the way of hops.

T-Maltier for an APA than I'd like, but the balance is good, Starts caramel/straw and ends with a milt citrus and grass notes. Orange as well.

M-Medium bodied, nicely carbonated.

O-Maltier than I was expecting from Alpine, but the balance was good. Don't expect a hoppy APA but for one on the malt forward side, it pulled it off.

Pours a super clear pale orange color with a small 1 inch white head that fades to a small cap. Spotty ring lacing on the drink down. Smell is of herbal hops and dirty socks. I think there is something seriously wrong with this bottle. Taste is of bitter herbal hops and a musty funky nastiness. Beyond awful. Surprisingly well carbonated with a crisp and clean feel. Ok, there has to be something very very wrong with this particular bottle. I had my wife confirm to make sure my nose/palate weren't off. First thing she said: "Smells like dirty gym socks". Disappointing.

Look: classic APA, burnt orange, a bit cloudy, 2+ fingers of off-white head.

Smell: some malt, but also lists of citrusy hops, with orange aromas really coming through.

Taste: again, classic APA, but the orange citrus flavors kick thou up a couple of notches.

Feel: bright and tangy, bubbly on the palate.

Overall: if I had regular access to this, it would always be in my beer fridge. A great representation of the APA style.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Thanks to mrmarmot for sharing.

A: Crystal Clear pale golden yellow. Mildly aggressive pour leads to a humongous 4 finger head. Head disappears relatively quickly leaving good lacing.

S: Cascade hops are first and foremost with caramel malt sweetness quickly to follow. Something smells off with this one though.

T: Funk. Hops are there and so is the malt but it's quickly erased by a spoiled bottle.

M: Light body, ample carbonation, horrible aftertaste.

O: Blech. One of my first drainpours in a while. I'm thinking this wasn't the best representation of the brew, but still wow, this wasn't good.

On tap at BC's Pizza & Beer

A: Pours golden yellow with a creamy off white head that settles to a firm layer and leaves plenty of lacing.

S: Pine and grapefruit dominate, a little lemon, touch of spice, and a little slightly toasty malt.

T: Resinous pine, some citrus, grapefruit and lemon, a little herbal peppery spice, and a touch of malt sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: Solid, but unspectacular.

A - A nice transparent gold with a thick white head.

S - Most of the nose is earthy/vegetable aroma from the hops. There is also hints of yeast.

T - Similar to the smell, there is an earthy flavor from the hops that hits you at first. Behind this flavor is some caramel from the grains. The finish is really nice and crisp with a hint of bitterness, but not too much.

M - Farily light bodied with a medium carbonation, makes this really pleasant to drink.

O - I don't think the smell or taste are anything special, but the crisp mouthfeel and refreshing finish make this an enjoyable pale ale that is easy to drink.
