From growler to pint glass

This was one of Alpine's featured brews at the Firestone Walker Invitational last weekend. By the time I got around to trying this, my palate was kinda numb (Hunahpuh, KBS, Kern's Citra led off the brigade). Plus, Centennial/Cascade hop-blends aren't always my favorite - kinda have that floral, Northwest-ish profile. But after sitting down watching a baseball game with my own pint, I think this is one of the best session ales I've had. The dry-hopping brought out citrus and tropical nuances I didn't think existed in these hops. Super refreshing, very easy to quaff.

A. Copper tan, clear appearance. A little sudsy head quickly dissipates and leaves little patches of lacing.

S: Signature Alpine bouquet, with touches of tropical fruit rind and caramelly malts. I'm actually picking up a little booze.

T/M: Hop-forward with big burst of citrus and tropical notes, something in between grapefruit and mango. Not as tropical as their Nelson, but layered and nuanced well above expectations. Adequate carbonation and an oily-slick mouthfeel only add to the ease with which I'm throwing this back. Tasty, hope this lands in their regular rotation, a great summer session ale.

On tap at the 2014 Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Fest held at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, CA.

Pours a clear yellow-orange with a foamy white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and floral flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Type: 64-oz. growler
Glass: Firestone pint glass
From: Alpine Beer Company in Alpine, Calif.
Price: $12.82
Purchased: March 21, 2015
Consumed: March 21, 2015
Misc.: N/A

Poured a golden, pale clear color with two fingers of frothy head. Light bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Minimal lacing on the sides of the glass. Below average-to-poor retention. (Sight - 3.50)

First whiff and it definitely reminded me of an Alpine beer. Was somewhere between a Duet or Bad Boy and a sessionable Pure Hoppiness. Got Citra, floral, buttery malts, caramel, Centennial (I think), nectarine rind and tropical spices. (Smell - 4.00)

First taste had me calling this a session IPA more than a pale ale. Those buttery malts came up first, followed by Citra, floral, caramel, nectarine pulp, orange rind, light mango and tropical. (Taste - 3.75)

Light body. Creamy-to-oily texture. Average carbonation. Long finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This was a pretty good APA overall. Nowhere as good as Hoppy Birthday, but still enjoyable. Probably not good enough to get a growler, but oh well. (Overall - 3.75)
