On tap at the pub, poured into a pint glass.

A: Dark brown beverage with a thin, coffee-tan head. Sticky lacing coats the glass.

S: Soft, subdued nose with notes of roasty coffee and toasted grains. Not much to the nose.

T: A lot more layered on the palate. Any coffee bitterness is offset by a milky, lactose aspect. The roasted malts yield a perfectly balanced sweet contrast, leading to a short, semi-sweet finish.

M: Smooth and velvety. Oily slick on the palate

Really easy to drink porter. Reminiscent of a milk stout.

fluffy, sweet-smelling head.... adjunct crap? looks beautifullll......... smells cheap. tastes decent, i guess.... giving it a shot and listening to my taste buds.... definitely something different than what I've experienced with Alpine.... hate the new label. ...hate green flash. been wanting to try this for awhile. my bottle says 5.3%.

On draft at Alpine Tasting Room, Alpine, California. Dark looking, great head and lacing. Has the chocolate aroma and vanilla taste. The taste is good and the rye and vanilla make it smooth. Overall a nice porter to try.

Pour is deep brown into a pint glass and offers a light cp if mocha foam. Clear and deep mahogany against the light. From a 3 day old chock full growler so might have lost a tad of carbonation, shows a light cap and some spotty lacing regardless.

Roasty aroma with a hint of caramel, and with more carob/chocolate through a bit of foam after a spin. Touch of charred wood but not ashy. No notable ethanol. Taste is smooth and silky with carob and a light char dominating. Doesn't have much texture on the feel yet offers a lingering finish dark chocolate with a hint of cherry licqueur. Feel is silky initially but grains a bit of traction with warming. Overall simple yet solid and would only ask for a bit more carbonation.

Draught pour at Quad into a shaker pint. Nose has strong smoky attributes. Taste has some smokiness to it, but was surprised by the absence of spicy attributes given the rye. Mouthfeel was surprisingly light, carbonation middle of the road, finished with a slight smokiness that lingered for a bit. A good porter but not something I'd seek out or buy regularly.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a dimpled mug. Best before 1/13/17, so I'm still under the wire!

Appearance: rich, dark brown hue with a thick finger of frothy tan foam atop. Very nice.

Smell: sweet and chocolatey with just a dash of vanilla. It's nice, but a bit too sweet for my taste.

Taste: roasty, chocolatey, a little sweet and again with just that hint of vanilla. The roasty element here is really nice and does a great job counteracting the heavy sweetness from the aroma.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a pretty big carbonation and a decent creaminess.

Overall: this is a tasty porter, and I could see quaffing a lot of it. The smell is a bit sweet, but the roastiness is big in this one and it keeps me coming back.

Looks like a porter should. Dark, almost black with a tan head. Really hard to screw that up yet some brewers do. Rye comes through pretty well and definitely sets this beer apart from other porters. Doesn't have as much of a chocolate or coffee note as many porters, but its roasted malts come through along with a slight bitterness. Not as sweet with the vanilla as I expected.

This is a beautiful porter, nearly black with a finger of tan head. It tastes like a porter, too - a "regular" porter, not a Porter with rye and vanilla.

I get a smidge of rye, but no vanilla, which is a bit disappointing, because I love vanilla. This isn't bad, in fact it's "good," but my expectations were that it would be great, and it's too thin to be great.

Plenty of rye, didn't get much of that vanilla. Almost felt like a beefed up schwartzbier with some extra roastiness due to the dryness of it. No creaminess that I was looking for. Still, very good. Cheers!

Very solid and delicious beer. Pours just about opaque, with a slight red hue, when light is present. Nice 1 finger tan head, that dissipates to a solid Ring. Spotty lacing

Aroma's aren't too crazy. Faint oats, with chocolate and a splash of vanilla. Hint of toffee, and Maybe like a watered down hot chocolate. Rye is kind of hidden in the back. Once it warms, they're more present.

Taste had just the right amount of bitterness with sweetness. Sweet chocolate and a decent hop bite, and vanilla finish. Very faint spurts of Rye, and Very smooth. Solid for 5.8% Rye comes through as the beer warms.

Mouth was very nice, with a lot of carbonation, and an extra vanilla dry finish.

I would pick this one up again if I seen it. Solid beer.

Type: 32-oz. crowler
Glass: Figueroa Mountain pint glass
From: Alpine Beer Company in Alpine, Calif.
Price: $6.48
Purchased: Sept. 15 2015
Consumed: Sept. 17, 2015
Misc.: Purchased on release day (about 99 percent sure)

Poured mahogany, dark reddish brown, opaque color with two fingers of fizzy tan head. Below average spotty lacing on the sides of the glass. Below average retention. (Sight - 3.50)

Smelled roasty malts, toasty nuts, espresso, roasted coffee beans, light chocolate, toffee, caramel, vanilla, crayon and some smoky fire. Reminding me of Odin’s Raven. (Smell - 4.00)

Taste was even better than the nose. Got roasted coffee malts, vanilla, smoky fire, dark chocolate, espresso, roasted toffee, caramel and bitter earthiness. (Taste - 4.25)

Full body. Creamy texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Bitter, abrupt finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Really liked this beer, especially as it warmed. Perfect size here with the 32-oz. crowler. (Overall - 4.00)
