Type: 10-oz. draft
Glass: Clear tulip glass
From: Alpine Beer Company Tasting Room in Alpine, Calif.
Price: $5.00 (I think)
Purchased: April 20, 2016
Consumed: April 20, 2016
Misc.: 2016 release was April 17

Was looking forward to this one, despite the fact that the last special release (Dark Elixir) was terrible in my mind. At least this one has been out before. Wasn’t keen on the $17 price tag for a bottle, especially the 500-ml. size (16.9-oz.) and wasn’t going to make the same mistake on buying three without tasting it, so I decided to get a glass.

Poured an auburn, murky color with two fingers of frothy, khaki head when I got it. Very good amount of spotty, spiderweb lacing. Average retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled sour cherry, raspberry tart, Smarties, hints of milky vanilla, red vinegar, sweet wine notes and some oaky wood. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste followed the nose, but not quite as balanced. First thought was that sour cherry turpentine that did not work on Dark Elixir, but it wasn’t as bad here. Sour cherries, great deal of tartness, cherry vanilla ice cream, red vinegar, hints of oaky wine barrel and some sweet wine (did not mark red or white and I cannot remember). (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Long, tart finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This was very good Flanders that will age nicely. I don’t think it was quite ready, but would like to have it again after sitting on it for a year or so. (Overall - 3.75)
