Sampled at the Alpine tasting room with Johndoe8.
Dark tan to white head. almost pitch black with brown around the edges.
Extremely hoppy! Green hop bursting flavors. Citrusy. Very sharp aroma.
Piney, citrusy, grapefruity, a little roast in the middle and lots o bitterness on the finish.
Light and smooth with a hop bite in the back. Nicely carbonated.
IPA's is what Alpine does. Chalk this up as another win.

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2017, blue session. Brown, muddy color with tan head. Aroma has dank hops, quite juicy and tropical as well. Taste is dank, hoppy with a medium resiny bitterness and light roastiness.

During GF/Alpine tap takeover at Davis Beer Shoppe. Quite certain this can't be the same beer that's highly rated, as this was a long ways from what I'd consider a good CDA.

Well that's as dark of an SRM as you're ever gonna come across prolly, and its not for a stout! 1" of tan head, so much retention. Aroma was bitter, tree like grapefruit hop aromas. Plenty of bittering hops in the aroma.
Taste had lots more bitterness, lower roast amount than expected. Alcohol was noticeable. A good black ale, clearly 2nd tier.

Type: 64-oz. draft growler
Glass: Manzanita pint glass
From: Alpine Beer Company in Alpine, Calif.
Price: $12.46
Purchased: Oct. 11, 2015
Consumed: Oct. 11, 2015
Misc.: N/A
Poured a rich, dark mahogany, closer to black color with 2-to-3 fingers of dark, khaki-tan, frothy head, which settles nicely on the top. Very good uneven, layered, spiderweb lacing on the sides of the glass. Very good retention. The best part of the beer. (Sight - 4.50)
Surprisingly got a lot more hops than anything else on the nose. Was expecting a rich, maltier nose, but got Citra, grapefruit, earthy, Citra rind, pine, some resin, faint pineapple and mango (wishful?) and floral, backed by a touch of roastiness. (Smell - 4.00)
More balanced in the nose than the smell with a good mixture of malts and hops. First taste is earthy, bitter Citra rind, followed by roasty, gritty malts. Also pine, char wood, Nugget, resin, faint roasted chocolate, tropical, cooked vegetables and much less grapefruit than the nose. (Taste - 3.75)
Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, earthy, veggie finish, reminding me slightly of a New Belgium Ranger IPA. (Feel - 3.25)
Disappointed in this one overall and I’m pretty much a sucker for Black Ale’s. Wish I would have just got a pint at the pub instead of a growler. (Overall - 3.50)

This is crazy. I expected more roast on the aroma but get citrus like a normal IPA. I'm not complaining but this is like a great regular Alpine IPA. More citrusy than roasty. Still a tasty brew!
