The Captain is leader of a fire crew. This beer takes charge of your taste buds with its rich flavor. Roasty malt character that has hints of chocolate and coffee which balances the smooth, velvety finish. The thick, creamy head lasts and lasts, leaving lace in your glass as your beer disappears. This beer pairs well with food. Great with dinner or as breakfast or even with a rich vanilla-bean ice cream.

Black beer, tan head, ample, great retention. Aroma was kind of lacking, slight chocolate malt aroma, not much else.

Good smooth oatmeal stout. No surprises. Smooth. Chewy. Chocolate malt. Little to no chocolate or coffee added I would guess, maybe a slight % of coffee malt. Thick viscosity, not overly sweet. A little bit nutty downbottle. Couldn't appreciate the caramel if it was there.

I appreciate this is a fairly ($6) priced bottle of a sessionable oatmeal stout, but I just don't see the complexities in this beer that other reviews do. Coffee, vanilla, caramel, just don't taste it in this beer.

June 6th, 2015 - Alpine's got some serious chops but their Captain Stout is another tasty ale on the darker end of the spectrum. That probably means it's ignored by San Diego's drinking community but it deserves the same wide distribution. The aroma has a light malty and toasty character, and is quite dry with a light red grape note. The palate is dry and foamy, and smooth on the finish, though desiccates the palate. It's a little light quaffing the head with each sip, delivering ghirardelli chocolate, though even darker and drier than the dark chocolate. The dry finish is inviting, and before I know it, the stout is gone.

The overwhelming flavor of this beer is the roasty malts. My criticism though is that it doesn't have enough sweetness to balance out the roasty flavor. However I think the flavor is very interesting and enjoyable, as well as a decent change of pace. This may not be exactly what I'm looking for in a stout, but I'm glad I tried it.

Appearance: Pours coffee brown with a flimsy head that quickly fades to a ringlet; stringy lacing

Smell: Chocolate, burnt toast and slightly tart tones

Taste: Chocolate and tart cherry forward, with some toast in the middle; rather bland through the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: This bottle has a bit of age on it so I may need to try this some other time; it has not gained anything from the aging process and I could have scored it much lower

Tasting notes from May 13th, 2016. Has on-tap at Alley Katz in Citrus Heights, CA

Appearance - Served up in a pint with a quarter finger width, khaki colored head. The brew itself is near black with cola brown edging. Fair retention of the head, then leaves a thin, broken layer of suds. Good amount of lacing, consisting mostly of broken webbing a a few spots here and there.

Smell - Light aroma

Taste - More flavor than the nose leads on. Malts hit on milk chocolate and hints of caramel and toffee, while the hops deliver a light earthy bitterness with a hint of citrus. Light roast comes through in the finish, then the aftertaste that rings with slightly astringent coffee grounds and some grapefruit pith.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with low to moderate carbonation. Slightly silky texture that leads to a mostly dry finish.

Overall - Good stout. It's flavorful, but lacks ideal depth in so far as roasted malt is concerned. Still, I can't be mad at it.

Black beer coming in with a tan head, 1/2" deep. Aroma had some roast, was nice, but not much else going on.

Oatmeal dropped smoothness accentuating the chocolate malt here. All malt driven flavor, caramel, lesser coffee and chocolate, nothing sweet or bitter really.

Would appreciate more if in a better format than bomber.
