Notes / Commercial Description:
The Captain is leader of a fire crew. This beer takes charge of your taste buds with its rich flavor. Roasty malt character that has hints of chocolate and coffee which balances the smooth, velvety finish. The thick, creamy head lasts and lasts, leaving lace in your glass as your beer disappears. This beer pairs well with food. Great with dinner or as breakfast or even with a rich vanilla-bean ice cream.

As a breath of fresh air drifts over the current beer scene, the normally hop-focused Alpine brewers reach into the goodie bag of history and pull out a sweet stout and then modernizes it. The restrained alcohol, lightened body and approachable, gentlemanly charm of Captain Stout shows that even when it comes to roasted flavor that Alpine is firmly in control.

Just the slimmest shade from black, the deep brown coffee-laden hues show dark tawny edges as a rich sandy lather billows above. One pass of the nose reveals the lavish intensity of molasses, dark roast coffee, roasted walnuts and caramel. Dark chocolate and coffee wash over the early palate bringing its robust molasses, toffee and caramel sweetness.

Decadently sweet, the beer's wonderfully burnt sugars prove savory and succulent as the malts wrap around each and every tastebud. With a modest carbonation, the ale sits weightily but not heavy on the tongue in full appreciation of the culinary art within. Rummy in warmth and pleasantly plump with grape and plum, layers of flavors keep announcing as the ale rolls across the middle palate.

Its long and savory finish is deep and lush, but never heavy. Surprisingly drinkable, silky and smooth, the coffee and bitter chocolate outlasts the scorched molasses as the full-bodied beer descends into aftertaste.

Poured into a 12 ounce snifter. Pours a nice jet black, slight hints of raisins. Flavor is meh, lots of roasty-ness, not much else, very underwhelming.

Pours black in color with a khaki, nearly brown, colored head.

Aroma is malty. Lots of nice roasted malt character in both the smell and flavor. Chocolate and carmel malts come through big in the flavor. I really enjoyed this one.
