What a great day to sit at home & drink some beers ISO The CANQuest (tm)! I think that this one came to me via my local, in-person trader @tone77 & got shunted into the backlog. 8=( I have to visit Atlas Brew Works on one of my trips to DC! My maternal aunt & her husband live in DC & I have visited there more than any other metropolis on the planet, dating back to the early-1970s when the underground Metro was still being built. Now, I go down, stay in a hostel or CouchSurf, hit all of my hotspots, drink a buncha beer & come back. It usually takes a couple/few days until I get burned out, but I want to include Atlas in a future visit.
From the CAN: "Solar Powered Beer"; "India Pale Lager"; "Beer Brewed In the District"; "D.C. Brewed"; "Science of Home Rule[:] Pair With[:] *Blue Crabs[,] *Grilled Asparagus[,] *Representation[;] 13.4P[;] 23 IBU[;] 2 SRM"; "Common’s Lantern [-] Thought to have been lost, this lantern illuminates meetings of the District’s Council since granted the right to govern itself in 1973. Just like the fierce flame of freedom, this light of the people can never be extinguished. However, residents of our nation's capital are not allowed congressional representation, yet are subject to congressional rule."
I was really getting anxious for the Crack! of the vent & so I beCAN acCANdingly. I let it run in a slow, gentle C-Line Glug, producing two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with excellent retention, leaving some tremendously sticky lacing in its wake. Color was an oh-so-slightly-hazy Pale-Straw (SRM = 1 - 2). Nose had a lemony, biscuity quality & while they are calling it an "India Pale Lager", I could have easily misidentified it as a BoHo Pils! It was delightful on the nose, like liquefied lemon biscotti. Mmm. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but not much past it. The taste was VERY lemony, making it highly refreshing, which is what I was going for. It had a beautiful lemony biscuitiness & once again, I was jonesing for some lemon biscotti from Enrico's Biscotti in Pixburgh's Strip District. 8=O Finish was lemony, dry & highly refreshing & satisfying. I CAN see a few of these in my backpack … ;=)

12oz can, served in a shaker pint glass. Pours a slightly hazy, unfiltered medium-darker yellow body, one and half finger white head, good carbonation and lots of lacing. Smell is lemon, touch of spice, grapefruit, pilsner bready malt, a bit of whole grain biscuit, mineral. Flavour delivers an exceptional hoppiness throughout; it's clear that they did not simply go with noble hops, but more of an American-style hop aroma. Citrus, grapefruit and lemon, a bit of resinous spice, biscuit and a dab of honey and cracker. Very nice, with a mild-moderate bitterness on the backend. Mouthfeel is a bit light on the carbonation; it could use a little more spritz. Mild-moderate citrus zesty bitterness on the backend accentuated by a bit of spice and biscuit. Good beer overall, tasty and more than appropriate for the hoppy lager genre.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a whitish/yellow color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of grains, light hops. Taste is citrus hops, malts, a touch of mint, highly refreshing. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is an easy drinking and decent beer.

Very pale in color, texture, and body but also features a solid ivory head that retreats slowly. The body also features medium to advanced haziness.
High in carbonation which stifles the flavor early. You get a bit of juicy hop bitterness following this and then some balancing malt. A little jumbled and higher than usual abv for a lager slows it down a little too.
I'm enjoying this sixer, but its not something I'll be buying regularly.

Poured into a pint glass from a can. Pours translucent yellow with a tiny white head. Smells of grass and some sweet grain. Tastes of grassy mildly malty, not much hop bite. Beer is light bodied and dangerously drinkable, good carbonation. Overall, a very good beer.

My litmus test for new beers has become rather simple. I ask the question to myself: Would I have this beer again?
The answer when it comes to Home Rule was a resounding yes. From there I go to why.
When poured from the can into a glass, the beer leaves some moderate lacing and the smallish head dissipates quickly. The look is bright yellow and mostly clear.
First off, it has a hint of tart fruit up front - green apple, green grape, maybe some lemon/lime essence. In terms of being a "hybrid" pale lager, the scales tilt more toward the lager end of things in general with a mostly dry and grainy profile. But the hops assert themselves more than most lagers and provide a nice mild lingering bitterness on the palate. I quite enjoyed the level of carbonation and the feel of this beer. It's a very versatile choice when it comes to food pairings that will compliment but not overpower most foods.
This is one that I'll seek out while in the DC area. Glad to have brought a six home as a souvenir.

A - Very pale yellow, slight green tint, short head, white, fizzy and quick to fade, not much lacing.
S - Grass, a bit of spice, cracker malts, and a bit of funk.
T - Strong grassy element, a bit of lemon, cracker middle, and a punchy bitter close.
M - Thin, but not unpleasant. Drying on the close over time.
O - Not particularly special, probably will be a better drink truly cold.
