Color is a dark mahogany with two fingers worth of khaki colored head. Aroma is of caramel malt, rye, some nuttyness, and a very light chocolate presence. Taste is a malty backbone with spicy rye and a moderate amount of hop bitterness. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Overall nice amount of spices, enjoyable easy to drink beer.

Nice clean and spicy brew. Not very bold, so it was quite easy to drink.

The beer comes in a deep amber color.

The aroma offers rich nutty malts, spicy rye bread, caramel sweetness, toasty bread, hints of floral.

The flavor hits of tea like bitterness, pine, deep earthiness, along with a spicy rye character, with an underlying medium plus toasty bread and malt base.

Medium brown color, slightly hazy, but not opaque. Moderate tan head, which leaves some lacing as it dissipates. The smell is piney with rye, spices & caramel. Taste is sharp, with rye, hops, and caramel malts. Bitter and dry at the end. Mouth feel is crisp, thin, with adequate carbonation. Nothing lingers except the piney taste. Overall, its an average beer, but it is true to its description on the can: Hop-Forward Rye ale. The hops & rye are prominent here.

Solid two finger head of dense foam with a large aggregation of bigger bubbles at the point of pour, eggshell white in color, leaves a continuous ring around the glass as the head recedes, like a ring of bath water. The liquid is murkily opaque with copious amounts of particulate floating inside, mostly brown with a fade to orange near the rims and glass bottom, hard to gauge amount and activity of the bubbles. The nose features spicy rye and burnt bread crusts, a touch of metal before softened by carob, cocoa and caramel notes, surprisingly sweet as it warms, slice of white grapefruit but not getting discernible fruit presence. Medium-bodied, the carbonation gives it a thick churning sensation, doesn’t scrub enough to prevent a drying layer from forming on the tongue. Here too it is the spicy rye which dominates, grainy the whole way through. The cocoa and caramel puts up a struggle to match the spiciness. The grapefruit notes here joined by pine cone and brown dirt type of earth. While it has roast in its profile, lots of malty residue at the end. This brew offers sufficient complexity without letting its reach exceed its grasp and does wisely in sticking to the promised script.

Can, poured into a 4oz sample glass. Dark amber color, with a long lasting head. Nose is spice from the rye along with some caramel maltiness. A little bit of that rye spice is noticed along with the cereal and some toffee. A light hop bite finishes off this reasonably enjoyable beer.

On tap at Nationals Park in Washington, DC.

Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, rye, and earth aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, rye, and earth flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of rye bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a great rye forward presence that comes through especially well in the smell.

Serving type: on tap.
