A 330ml bottle with a BB of Aug 2015, so this is well out of date. I'm hoping that it has aged well given it's strength. A collaborative brew between Siren and de Molen for the Rainbow project 2014, the label describes this as an RIS with an added dose of black pepper.
A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A very dark brown colour that appears ultra black in the glass. Yields a smallish head of creamy brown foam that lasts for mere moments before reducing and dissipating to a thin collar.
S: Aroma of rich dark malt with hints of roasted grain, molasses, prunes, dried fruit, berries, subtle cocoa, ale yeast, faint smokiness and a touch of spice. Perhaps a whisper of oxidation in the background. Complex and quite sweet - nice.
T: Tastes of intense roasted malt with notes of burnt grain, molasses, dried fruit, mild cocoa, a hint of coffee, ale yeast, a twinge of smoke and faint spice in the background. Fairly sweet but with a moderate malty bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with soft carbonation and an unctuous body. A very subtle peppery heat tickles the palate. Could be a shade more textured. Aftertaste of roasted malt, fruitiness, molasses, mild bitterness and a hint of pepper.
O: Rich, sweet and complex - rather nice. Looks good, while the aroma and flavour are a fantastic blend of roasted malt, molasses, fruitiness, yeast and faint spice. Great body; perhaps just a tad more carbonation is in order. A lovely sipper that has aged fantastically, and the pepper adds a delicate layer of character without being intrusive. Excellent.

The colour is pitch black with a brown edge (100 EBC), the finger thick head is brown and airy. It sinks slowly leaving some lacing.
The rich smell is smooth and strong. Roasted malt, exotic spices and hints of smoke, metal and perfume.
The taste is smooth with distinct notes of black pepper (the spicy-fruity part, not the hot one). Mild sweetness. Perfume, oriental spices and roasted corn. Full body. The aftertaste is quite mild with some alcohol, black pepper, nutmeg and a touch of bitter herbs. The finish shirt is a bit hot/spicy with dried fruits.
The carbonation is mild, the small fresh bubbles are short-lived. The liquid is thick and smooth.
A very interesting spiced stout. Lots of flavours for an 8.5% beer of this kind.
