Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
An American Red Ale influenced by multiple beer styles. Intense citrus and stone fruits dominate the nose (or beak if we're staying with the duck theme), yet the bitterness from the hops is balanced by Belgian and American crystal malts. It smells like an IPA exploding with fancy American hops but has a smooth, malty-but-not-too-malty finish.

A: The beer is relatively clear amber in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high dense off white head that has very good retention properties and consistently left a short head covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of grapefruit and spicy hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, but has strong undertones of the underlying malts, the latter of which stand out in the finish and lend some flavors of caramel to go along with the spicy hops.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The taste of this beer has a very good balance between the malts and hops.

From 07/30/14 notes. On tap at Stags Head in NYC. 16 oz. pour into a pint glass.

a - Pours a deep burnt amber color with two inches of off white/light tan head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of toasted malts, dark fruity malts, burnt malts, earthy notes, floral hops, and some spices. More fruit than the taste had.

t - Tastes of burnt malts, toasted malts, fruity malts, bread, grains, dough, earthy notes, and light spice.

m - Medium body and moderate to low carbonation. Smooth, little less carbonation and it would be amazing.

o - Overall not a big fan of this beer or the two beers I've had from them so far in general. This one just had too much burnt and toasted malt to it for me. Wouldn't seek it out again.

On tap at the Lark in East Northport. Pours very cloudy copper amber color with a foamy off white head that faded slowly and left OK spotty lace. Smells of citrus hops, grapefruit, caramel, orange peel, toasted grains, herbs and a malty sweetness. Hops jump at you first, then the malt settles in and adds nice balance for a very nice aroma. Tastes very similar, with citrus hops, grapefruit, lemon, sweet malt, caramel, light toffee, orange peel, toasted grains, tea leaf, flowers or floral hops, mild yeast and a malty sweetness that is bready and similar to a toasted cracker. Mouthfeel is medium with a feel on the slick side, carbonation on the light side and a sweet bready aftertaste that's got doughy notes which are almost buttery. Overall a nice amber with just enough hops in the flavor to give it complexity and balance.

A: crystal clear; deep bronze in color; 1+ finger off white head that receded to a thin cap; very nice lacing;

S: balanced - earthy caramel with a bit of floral;

T: balanced up front; predominantly caramel from the middle through the finish; mild bitterness at the end;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: didn't have the hop character I hoped for - certainly not like an IPA as the label promises; no date on the can, so maybe it was old;
