An imperial smoked black rye oaked raspberry IPA? Oh my.

Poured into, fittingly, a Martin House pint glass, this beer is a deep rich dark brown color with a light brown head that has serious staying power. Decent lace as well. A really pretty beer that looks like it could be a porter. The nose is assertive, with notes of dark fruit, bakers chocolate, coffee, and some pine. This aroma basically tells you up front that this beer isn't messing around that you better brace yourself. The taste is just as bold, with strong coffee and raspberry flavors. At first I thought I detected more dark cherry, but as the beer warmed and mellowed to room temp, the raspberry notes became more distinct. Some chocolate taste here too, with a strong hoppy presence. Mouthfeel is a bit tinnish, and it finishes very bitter.

I like this beer. I like it because it's good, but I really like it because it's different, and it's so damn hard to find really different beers these days. Martin House continues to push the envelope on style. I've said this before and I'll say it again, Martin House is the best brewery in Texas right now, and this is just another example why. And no, I'm not friends with or related to anyone at the brewery. I hope they continue to push boundaries. Keep up the good work. Cheers.

Not a fan of this beer. Not sure the smoke, raspberry and hops work together

This is an interesting one. Poured from draft into a snifter. Dark brown with a beige fluffy hear and great lacing. The smell was sweet and fruity. The tastes was an excellent meld of May different things, none dominated and each contributed to a great flavor. The was chocolate, spices like nutmeg and pepper, raspberry, some vanilla. I enjoyed it very much for Valentine's Day!

This looked very interesting and I was intrigued by all the weirdness of the ingredients. For me, they didn't quite work. I was impartial to the raspberry component. It wasn't offensive but I just didn't think it should be hanging out in my imperial black IPA. What really killed this for me was the mouthfeel. It was so fucking abrasive and bitter, I felt like it completely blew my palate. If a beer is that bitter for me it just isn't enjoyable, no matter what. I wouldn't spend more money on this.

12 oz. can poured into tulip
(10.3% ABV; "canned on 12/30/15" printed on sticker on plastic ring)

L: black, can't see through it, pushes up thick but short head of tan foam about 1/2-inch tall; no sticking, minimal lacing; the beer is clear and dark brown on the edges

S: floral and hoppy, grapefruit and pine; as it warms a little, chocolate-cherry sundae, very sweet

T: everything ... piney hops, burnt dark malt, loads of sweetness and an oak-wood finish; a little cherry/raspberry flavor peeks through the bitter notes at times

F: thick ... very slick and heavy but loads of carbonation

O: good big beer ... has both stout and American IPA characteristics, and everything pulls together nicely

I haven't liked any MH beers. This beer is excellent.
