Big chocolate nose and flavors with good whiskey coming through. Body a bit thin in my opinion but not a detractor. Finish has a nice balancing mild bitterness.

Pours a thick, viscous dark brown; opaque; thick, somewhat fizzy head, long lasting, though. Great smell; chocolate and cocoa; a bit of whiskey in the background. Delicious taste; milk chocolate; rye spiciness; abundant yet subdued notes of whiskey; cocoa powder. Heavy mouthfeel; soft and velvety; somewhat airy; sharp alcohol heat and bite.

I like this stout. The rye barrel aging comes on bold and strong yet is nicely offset with the base imperial stout.

The cacao is noticeable throughout. It's dry and roasty up front, building to a really intense chocolatey note with minimal sweetness at the finish. Love it. I get some oak, molasses, ash, and burnt sugar at the edges plus biting whiskey at the exhale. Big, bold flavors here and the14% is extremely well masked. Love this one, thanks again Dave!

This was my last beer of this evening. To Ed!

Poured from tap into a a small snifter. Deep rich dark brow color with nice brown head and good lacing. Rich smell and taste of dark chocolate and coconut, along with dark berries and a warming rye booziness. A bit of mocha. A pleasant way to end the evening.

Appearance: Black glass holds a halo of dark tan head that gives up some spots of lace.

Aroma: Roasted/burnt barley, malt marshmallow sweetness, hints of orange citric notes.

Taste: Lots of malty sweetness, some barrel, some citric hop, tootsie roll chocolate, just the most subtle hint of alcohol hiding dangerously in the corner.

Mouthfeel: Frothy, medium high carbonation, medium heavy body, slight chew and lip smack. Clean finish, a bit warming. Gets silky as the carbonation settles out.

Overall: It's an unholy word, not one to be spoken lightly. Monster beer, big ole malt bill, enough hops to keep it from being cloying. Pretty basic profile but I like everything in it, I like it a lot. Happy to see this rare box, hope Martin House keeps it in the rotation.

Any 12 oz. beer can with the words “stout” & “rye” on it is singing my name in Perfect Pitch. Not sharing. And nice artwork.

Lifting weight black with one of the most persistent mocha heads ever on a big stout. Mild chocolate & rye spice on the nose.

Kokytus wields a light kick of rye & a super-smooth, creamy, sweet base. Wood & booze come out to play prominently, with a finishing caress of bitterness. One can is sufficient for my needs, tonight & for the forthcoming future.

Not much to see here. A standard, pretty good effort in the category.

First time with a Martin House offering. Solid. Good looks. Nose is nothing to write home about, but you can inhale the key components well enough. Definitely not sweet. It’s a strong serious malt base, with a decent whiskey bite up front, laid back by the cacao nibs. I don’t get the chocolate liqueur vibe I like from some stouts that use it, but it’s like a drier version. Alcohol hides, but progressively creeps in.

This stuff is dark: If this was old engine oil, I would think the engine was toast. I was a bit taken back when it started coming out of the can and into the glass. The head was a nice tan-brown, but it did not linger too long.
This smell is intense: I could get hints of it in the air when I started the pour. Definite hints of whiskey or rye coming off of this brew.
It tastes like bourbon-beer, and the 14% is just as stunning as the art work on the can.

Appearance: Utterly black in color, with no hint of highlights, even before a strong light. Masses of bubbles cling to the glass wall beneath the surface. The head is large, tan-colored, somewhat coarse, and quite persistent. Thick and irregular patch lacing adorns the glass wall.

Aroma: Rich notes of sweet alcohol and bitter chocolate dominate the aroma. As well, there are notes of what seems to be oak and also vanilla, milk chocolate and brown sugar.. The alcohol notes, while quite strong, are nonetheless, very pleasing.

Taste: Upon tasting, there is a wave of sweet alcohol, with notes of oak. Soon after, bitter chocolate and chocolate syrup present. The sweet alcohol, which is indeed like rye, dominates the taste from start to finish, although it is never overpowering or harsh, just lightly sweet and mildly spicy, with a little warmth. Midway through the taste, there is a pleasant wave of brown sugar, Late in the taste, the wood notes ascend, without becoming harsh, while offering a counterpoint to the sweetness of the alcohol. Finishes with lingering bitter chocolate.

Mouth feel: Rich, very full and soft, with just a faint hint of carbonation.

Drinkabilty/notes: An American Imperial Stout of astonishing quality, and extraordinarily well-balanced. With an ABV of 14%, Kokytus could have been an alcohol bomb. Instead, it is an elegant and gracious example of its style. I regret I will never have this again, it seems perfect for Halloween 2021. Martin House should consider Kokytus as an annual release.

Presentation: Packaged in a twelve-ounce aluminum can, served in a La Fin du Monde chalice.

Had Kokytus poured from 12-oz. can, bottom stamped "CANNED ON 07/17/20," gift from friend, into snifter.

An absolutely black beer, which shows a respectable tan head that doesn't last, as expected for a barrel-aged beer. Aroma off the pour is mild roast malts and whiskey, with toffee and mild milk chocolate showing as warms. Not overly complex, creamy roast malts and toffee to start, then mild chocolate, balanced by some nice hop bite, before the 14.0 ABV warms up the finish.
