In town for work and decided to check this out based on the BA / untappd ratings.
Reminded me of severa college bars i used to go to. Wall to wall wood - wood tables, wood chairs, wood floor, etc. Two bars - one downstairs, one up top. Pool tables and such upstairs.
Tap selection is varied and mostly local to the areas distro. Lots of hops when i was there. The bottle list is more varied. The reserve list is where it is at though: kbs, vintage backwoods bastard, bell's batch 9000 (iirc).
Service wise was superb. Chatted with one of the managers and they were very knowledgeable regarding what they have, what they had, and whats upcoming. Also very cool that they do private tasting events (via auction) with the proceeds going to charity.
Food was ok - perhaps i ordered the wrong thing. Wouldnt stop me from trying something else though.
Two big dings against this place though - first being their hardcopy menus and untappd menus are not reflective of current beers. They list java ba 10-50 and they did have it but it was sometime ago according to the bar tender. Second, they have a cooler with bottles and cans, not all of which show up on the menu. I missed out on WB 6th Anniversary - not a big deal to locals but for a person who doesnt see WB in their neck of the woods, very disappointing.
So defintely check it out. Look at the reserve list, look in the cooler, and ask if they have anything not listed.

A 2-story venue with lots of taps upstairs and even more downstairs. Also carries a large selection of bottles. Rare beers routinely come thru here, as do various special events. I’ve enjoyed beers here with both Sam C. (Dogfish Head) and Greg Koch (Stone), not to mention a good variety of friends and strangers. Friendly atmosphere. Probably THE best craft beer bar in SC.

Some of the best beer selection downtown. When I stopped in, they had Creature Comforts on draft (and can) and Orpheus cans. That was enough for me. Plenty of SC and NC favorites. The bartenders knew what they were talking about as well. I did not go upstairs on this visit. But, on past visits, the upstairs selection is great. My only complaint is it's pretty dark inside and you get an "old" feeling. But, you go to drink (and eat) so why worry so much about decor, right? I'll definitely continue to go back.

Great beer selection, friendly staff, decent but limited food selection, big wide open spaces and fair prices. The only drawback is it's downtown location and parking limitations. Move this to right off I-85 and add ample parking and it becomes world class.

I popped into Barley's on a business trip to Greenville, SC which doubled as an intelligence-gathering trip prior to relocation to the city. To say that I was pleasantly surprised would be a major understatement. From the beer selection, to the quality of the food, to the mind-blowing friendliness of the staff and other patrons, Barley's compares favourably to the Philly hangouts I'm going to miss after moving down south. Two thumbs up in Z-formation!

Stopped at Barley's on a road trip from Atlanta to Charlotte this afternoon. My only disappointment was their website showed they had Mexican Cake on tap and I was really looking forward to trying it for the first time, but the keg had kicked a while back. Aside from that, the experience was great! I had a cajun chicken sandwich that was very tasty. The beer selections was outstanding. I had a couple good selections in bottles and tried a great local coffee/chocolate stout from a local Greenville brewery, Quest, which is only distributing via keg right now. I picked up a 2009 Backwoods Bastard from their reserve/cellar list to enjoy later. I will definitely be stopping by here again the next time I go through town.

Excellent place to go in Greenville for the beer enthusiast. The lower level is the main eating area and has a slightly different tap list than the upstairs. Upstairs is the late night hangout with pool tables. The food is good and the prices are reasonable. Tasting nights are frequent. Take the time to go around the corner to The Greenville Beer Exchange.

By far, this is the best beer bar in Upstate South Carolina if not the entire state itself. A wide selection coupled with cheap and delicious eats makes for a wonderful experience that doesn't break the bank. The selection is wonderful, but also incorporates a reserve list in case you're looking for something a bit more vintage. Example: '09 KBS.
If you're in Greenville, this is a must do whether you're a craft beer fan or just someone looking for a cheap slice of pizza. Put Barley's on your agenda.

One of the best beer lists I have seen at a restaurant. They won some kind of national award that was presented by Stone. I don't know the details, but it sounds pretty impressive for a restaurant in Greenville, SC. They were named "Most Arrogant Bar" They must be doing something right.
I am assuming this location is a franchise of the Barley's in Asheville, NC. I think Greenville has the better of the two.
While scoping out the joint, I notice some obnoxious amounts of rare beer above the bar. The 20 six-packs of Bell's Batch X,000 , and about 24 bottles of DFH WWS stood out to me.
The server reassured me that they were indeed unopened after I expressed doubt, then she informed me they were not for sale. Apparently the owner is a showboat. I would rather you not display your beer cellar if you do not entertain offers.
I'll be back though, great place.

After countless trips to Greenville, finally made it a point to stop by here with the family. We went for lunch, so I didn't get as great an opportunity to "explore" their beer choices. My wife and I each got a slice, and what a slice it was! These are monster slices so I was happy about that. I also got their chili, which was highly recommended to me, and it was good. Their tap list was great, a list any restaurant would be proud to have. Good number of bottles as well. They have a "cellar" full of all sorts of vintage ales which is a really nice option. Above the bar was a good number of what they had available. The notable ones that jumped off to me were Batch 9,000, Batch 10,000 and KBS. Not sure the year of the KBS, but does it really matter? I'm sure you pay a premium for those options among others, but it's nice to have the option to snag some highly rated beer. I've been in the upstairs before to play pool, but didn't venture up there this time. All-in-all, this is a great place to stop for some good food, and excellent beer.

After visiting Greenville for the last ten years or so, finally got to check this place out, it may be in greenvilles beer Mecca block, with gbx behind it and the trappe door next door.
About a 20 minute wait at 7 on a Friday however we chose to sit at the big bar. It was a little cramped as they tried to squeeze a few more tables in than they prob should. Very extensive beer menu in both bottle and on draft. They also have a reserve list of aged beers.
We got two beers a piece an appitzer and the lady got a calzone, and I ordered a slice of pizza. The pizza slice was big enough for a small meal. Total was about 35 bucks.
Had a good conversation with the bar tender, she was fairly new only worked there a few months, but was pretty beer knowledgable and actually suggested I not try a beer because it was meh.
Didn't have a chance to check out the bar upstairs but will on the next trip.

Really like this place. Lived in Greenville a while before I appreciated good beer. It took coming back to visit on a regular basis for me to realize what I'd been missing. Taps are always primo and at the right temperature for each beer served. Bottle selection is great and includes several vintages for a variety of bottles. Bartenders are knowledgable and quick with a recommendation. Food is decent with great vegetarian and vegan options. Wait staff is efficient and friendly. They also offer a good number of classes or visiting brewer events. Sister restasurant Trappe Door is just a few steps away.

Barley's, what can you say. If you are in G'Vegas you have to stop by. Very cool atmosphere in an old store/warehouse, great exposed brick. Excellent beer selection with different brews on tap both downstairs and up. Beer selection ranges from across the U.S. as well as the world, although I like to focus on the Southern brews. Bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable and offer good recommendations. Upstairs is great at opening time before it gets too busy, darts, pool you name it. One of the many reasons Greenville is great.
