On tap at the Hammerheart taproom. 13 oz. serving in a chalice.

Appearance: Color is a deep amber orange. Moderate amount of bubbles and about a finger of off white head which settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A fruity and smokey hop driven aroma with a scent of citrus fruit and smoked malt. Citrus hop scent of orange peel, grapefruit, and tangerine. Some hints of piney and grassy hops. Malt hints of smoke, caramel, cracker, and grains. Scent of Belgian like yeast along with some sugar. A pretty good hoppy aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a fruity and smokey hop forward taste with notes of citrus fruit and smoked malt. Upfront citrus hop notes of grapefruit, orange peel, tangerine, and lemon. Also some piney and grassy hop notes. Malt notes of smoke, caramel, grains, and cracker. Some spicy Belgian like yeast notes along with some candied sugar. A very nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy and fairly chewy with a drying finish.

Overall: A very nice smoked spin on an IPA. Nice blend of citrus hop and smoked malt flavor.

Smooth nose of lightly herbal hops, with a ribbon of tangerines and grapefruit. Maybe a bit of resin, this has a note of mystery that I presume to be smoke.

The flavor is very light and airy but flavorful. The hops are strong, mostly herbal tones, but it has a resiny flavor without being overly bitter. The fruit taste is more nectarines or tangerines, with little of the acrid grapefruit. All the while there's a bit of flavor that's hard to put a finger or a taste bud on. I can only assume it's the smoked aspect that leaves this to be just a bit different.

12-oz tulip at the brewery.

First impression is good. It has a billowing head and dark amber hue. I find the smoke confusing on the nose, however. It really fights with the hops, which are primarily Centennial. It's a confusing smell. The taste is much brighter and reveals more citrus than I expect, and considerably maltier. Bitterness is strong and lingering.

I would have really enjoyed this IPA without the malt. As it is, it's merely pretty good.
