I had this at the Dudes Brewery/Taproom close to Santa Monica Boulevard. It has ABV an ABV of 9.40% and IBU 103.

Look: dark golden to orange with a thin white head

Aroma: tropical fruits, floral pine

Taste: It's slightly sweet, fruity, mango, passion fruit maybe, lots of grapefruit, bitter

grapefruit rind towards the end.

Body/Overall: medium body

Nose is light malt, grapefruit, pine.
Taste is pine, bitter hops, grapefruit, orange rind. Solid malt backbone. Lingering bitter hops, and grapefruit.
Body is clean, and crisp. Not overly sweet or cloying like double IPAs can tend to be.

Pours a hazy golden color. Strong lacing and a fair amount of head. Weak nose. Notes of citrus. Taste is watery but hoppy. Overall nothing special but a serviceable DIPA.

Appearance: Cloudy amber, with an average head of off-white suds.

Nose: Nice citrus grapefruit hops. Not bad.

Taste: Heavy in body, taste fruity, a little apricot. Sharp tang and alcohol heat. Bitterness on tongue at finish and a little burn.

This may have not been an entirely fresh pint can, but a pretty solid DIPA regardless.

Pours a half finger of head on a clear straw body.
The aroma is lemon and flowers.
The taste is mild bitterness... a little lemon and other citrus.
The texture is medium.
It's easy drinking but not much flavor.

Poured out of a can, trying something different here, aggressive flavors coming at me, with hops screaming too. Not balanced through out, smells decimate quickly, foam and lacing ok. A decent beer with the amount of abv it has.

Poured from pounder can into a Parish snifter
Look - pours a hazy, orange-gold color with a 3/4" white head. Retention is good, lace is huge and sticky.
Smell - At first, you get a big citrusy orange aroma but as it warms, more and more danky pine and resin come forth, along with a heavy dose of caramel malt. Alcohol presence is definitely there, at 9.4% abv.
Taste - Pretty nice balance between the malty backbone and the citrus/pine combo. Booze is not as prevalent in the sip as in the nose.
Feel - Heavy-medium body, with a bit of heat that lingers on the tongue. Carbonation is a bit low and the sip is finishes nice and sticky.
Overall - This was a gift/extra in a box from my brother and I'm not sure where he acquired it. I definitely enjoyed this one. Big, balanced DIPA.

Look: Nice orange tangerine color, clear.

Smell: Hoppy and citrusy. Lots of strong smells.

Taste: Hop bomb but you get that tangerine, grapefruit flavor in the end. Sticks around.

Feel: Nice typical IPA feel.

Overall: Great beer would buy again.

16oz can. Poured out a clear, golden-orange color with a small, white head of bubbly foam. It smelled of citrus with piney hops. It tasted of citrus, tropical fruits and toasted caramel with a piney hop bitterness.

i got that btew double trunk ipa with others brew today. i pour this pint can into Porter/ Stout glass 14 oz. it gives sweet aromas when 2 fingers-size foam settled. i sip and it gives nice coat of hops on the tongue and then leave a hint of strong kick on the end note. good IPA for canned brew category. great taste!

This is definitely a double ipa, but maybe for the wrong reasons.

Aroma - very little aroma hops, mostly there is a strong alcohol smell
Appearance - good, looks clear and clean
Taste - There is a piney hop forward taste followed by a hot alcohol blast. It almost tastes like Jim Bean was added to a regular IPA. So if you're in to getting hammered fast then this is the beer for you. If you are in to complex, hoppy, malty balanced DIPAs then this is not the beer for you. Plenty other local LA brews (Wolf Among the Weeds) that fit this bill much better.

don't get me wrong, this is an enjoyable brew but one is enough otherwise you'll be on your donkey in seconds flat.

Again canned some more Dudes open from Total Wine in Northridge CA.

A- Ruby, Sapphire and Orange colors are what come to me when I look at this beer. Simply a great beer to look at. Medium thick head keeps you company while drinking.

S- Hop bitterness fills the nose and finishes with the faint smell of grape fruit, orange, pineapple and dank.

T- A blast of hops come forward and surprise with a finish of sugar and malt. Compliments the hops nicely while the alcohol warmness begins to creep in and solidify itself.

A solid offering from the dudes. I would definitely seek this beer out from bars for draft offerings.

Glowing orange/amber body. Tight ivory white head. Lacing is full and comes in sheets. Aroma is solid. Resinous, dank....gritty. The flavor follows suit. Dank and resiny. Not a bright DIPA, but still decent in its own right. Bitterness is pretty clean. Also get some melon fruits too....like cantaloupe. Body is medium-full and carbonation is ramped down appropriately. Alcohol is hidden very nicely in the beer. For close to 11%, it's very minimal. Decent beer.

A-Deep gold color..minimal head..

S-Toffee like malt...sweet smelling...overripe peaches...kind of a body odor aroma as well.

T-Not a ton of hop flavor here. Sweet, sticky type of sweetish malt...hops lend an overripe sweet fruit flavor...thinking peaches, nectarines...

M-Medium full bodied....sticky sweet...just a light finishing bitterness.

O-I thought I liked this better in the hotel room in LA than I do now as I disect it. It's an OK sweetish DIPA.

Poured into a wine/tulip/snifter

A - Very nice semi translucent late evening California copper sunset. Two finger dense head and some sugar legs

S - Pungent, huge sugar, nice booze, huge malt, very bready, nice floral hop, a bit dank, grainy and very fresh bright citrus

T - Hoppy malty explosion up front, gives way to a bright hoppy punch, sugar and booze, drinks like a meal, nice grain, flowers and ends with a huge malty backbone

M - Full bodied, nice balance, simple yet nice complexity, medium acidity and a huge malt/hop/sugar bomb finish

Final thoughts - $12 bucks a 4 pack is a lot, but at 10.8% and 16 oz each. This is my new friend right now!

As an LA resident I really want to get behind the plethora of new local breweries that seem to be popping up almost daily. I love the name "The Dudes" and sure they are capable of making some decent beers but Double Trunk is not one of them.

The smell is heavy on malts and doesn't inspire confidence in the hop bill. This beer starts out super malty and sweet with very little hop flavor. The bitterness comes in way late with a heavy hand as if the makers knew they had a sweet cloying mess and tried to cover their tracks. This beer drinks hotter than the 10.8% abv.

Drain pour.

Tastes like a sick cross between Colt 45 and that one Safeway-brand IPA (Green Something). Smells sweet and gross. Tastes strongly of alcohol.

There's no reason this should be commercially available.

I'm as qualified to call myself a surgeon as this company is a brewery.

Big DIPA, lot of great qualities, and I love that it comes in a can, although multiple people thought they were cans of coconut water. Malts and citrus on the nose and palate, nothing off the beaten path but very well balanced and easy to drink. Hop presence not as pronounced as expected or as typifies the style. Not overly sweet. Some booze at the end, warms the stomach. Smooth, great feel, not sticky. Overall, fairly good beer, probably won't be one of my go-to since it's up against some phenomenal competition, but I am excited to try more from The Dudes.

A: Beautiful golden color with lingering white head. Almost transparent

S: Very nice at first - tropical fruit and pine blast, but then the aroma becomes more subdued.

T: Follows the nose, but a bit muted. Also, there is some slight astringent harshness. A very nice malt flavor comes out as it warms.

M: Farily dry with lively carbonation

O: A good DIPA. I would drink this again if it were offered to me, but I don't think I would seek it out.

Dudes' is a local South Bay LA Brewery with distribution in SoCal. Double trunks is available in tallboy cans and on tap. Sample reviewed from tap.

Amber/Orange color, cloudy with a thick cream-colored head. The head persists with lacing on the glass.

Beer smells more malty than hoppy, which suprised me for the DIPA style. Taste is bitter though, resulting in a nicely balanced DIPA. Alcohol smell and taste are minimal despite >10% ABV. Notes of grapefruit and malt present.

Double Trunk is very good, but not in the same calss as Pliny the Elder

16 oz can to my FW Imperial Nonic glass
Notes taken from 12/01/13

A: Deep and dense amber body with a glowing orange tinge to it. This is one heady bitch billowing with the khaki stuff. Incredible amount of hang from the cloud of fluff on top that just cakes the glass with stick all the way down the drink.

S: Smells of grainy malt on the nose. Odd as I was expecting a burst of hops here. Perhaps some light pine and florals there but this is mostly grains in the aroma. Pretty flat and disappointing.

T: Grainy malt base remains firm in the flavor with some restrained grapefruit, orange rind, pine, and a touch of florals. There is a high amount of hop bitters but with a relatively low amount of actual hop flavor. The alcohol makes an appearance but is incredibly well masked for such a big beer and in that sense this is fairly well balanced. The additions of dextrin are likely here as this stays very dry and crisp with only some minor sweetness. This needs some work. The malt and alcohol balance are there but late addition hops are just lacking.

M: Fairly light to moderate filling with some high bitters and a drying finish. Warming alcohol noted. Slightly sticky but not particularly resinous.

D: Like a hopped up malt liquor. High octane with some balanced drinkability. Not a favorite. Could be great but definitely needs more dry hops.

Crystal clear orange hued body with a medium-large frothy bone hued head. Aromas are of floral and citrusy hops, light grapefruit pith, alcohol and malty sweet notes, light biscuit and caramel. Low ester. Flavors are medium balance, malty, low bitter, floral, citrusy. Well hidden alcohol. No fusel character, but immediately warming. Light windex/chemical flavor in the finish. Lingering citrus. Not overtly forward in its dry hop character. Medium carbonation, warming, medium bodied.

I genuinely love the taste of this beer. But I always regret it the next day with that hangover feel after 1 of these. I think they're adding a generous portion of sugar in this during fermentation and this is the reason I am keeping this beer from being a high 4 review. Reason I claim this is the body... It is very thin with a very mild malt profile. There's just no other way they're hitting these ABV numbers and getting this body without adding sugar during fermentation. Because of this practice you essentially have a malt liquor brew and claiming it to be craft beer. For this to be a great craft, they need to care about the beer. Use a Wyeast, dry hop with some simcoe, and get that abv up there from the boil. Calling this a DIPA or anything remotely close to an IPA is a disservice to the craft community. If cheaply hopped malt liquor is your thing, then this beer is for you.
