Really impressed by this one. Incredible mix of coffee and vanilla for days that blends so well with the barrel presence. Body is more substantial than I expected as it drinks like a stout.

Tried this at Autumn Beer Review

This was a good beer, but not as good as I had hoped. I thought the coffee (and the beer in general) was overwhelmed by the vanilla. This beer is their double black ale with double coffee and vanilla aged for 5 months in barrels. I think they should keep the recipe but only do a single strength vanilla. The Bourbon barrels naturally add vanilla flavor, so when that was combined with the additional 2x vanilla I thought it was too much for me. The body was there, the small was amazing, but vanilla just dominated over the malt, coffee, or barrel flavors, so it was a bit of a miss for me. However, it did take 'best beer of ABR', so apparently im in the minority...

Poured from a 750 ml waxed bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours jet black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Slight finger of tan head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A roasty and rich dark malt driven aroma with a scent of bourbon, coffee, and chocolate. Good barrel presence with a scent of bourbon whiskey, oak, vanilla sweetness, and wood. Dark roasted barley malt with a big scent of coffee beans and dark chocolate along with hints of biscuit, toast, oats, caramel, and toffee along with yeast. Some sweet hints of molasses and candied sugar along with the vanilla. Also some earthy hop hints. A very good rich aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a rich and roasty dark malt driven taste with notes of bourbon, coffee, and chocolate. Nicely boozy barrel notes of bourbon whiskey, vanilla, oak, and wood. Dark roasted barley malt with notes of coffee beans, dark chocolate, toast, biscuit, smoke, oats, toffee, and caramel with some yeast. Sweet notes of molasses, candied sugar, and more vanilla. Subtle notes of earthy hop bitterness. A really good taste.

Mouthfeel: Body is on the fuller side of medium. Carbonation is moderate. Creamy, chewy, and somewhat syrupy. Alcohol heat is moderate.

Overall: A very good Barrel Aged Black Ale. Good balance of bourbon barrel, coffee, and dark malt flavors.

really enjoyed this beer (thanks Ben M.) great bourbon smell, taste and slight chewy mouth feel. I would definitely recommend trying this is right up there with any of the great bourbon barrel aged stouts in my opinion.

Those long Minnesota winters have beer drinkers needing a little extra incentive to get out of the house and the Bent Paddle Brewing Company does just with that with an imperial stout that invites a smooth creaminess from vanilla and a jolt of energy from a double coffee spicing regimen.

Fresh out of the pot, Double Shot Double Black pours a doubly black darkness with a frothy tan head that rises to the rim. Bold coffee aromatics fuse with aspects of char, smoke, cocoa and burnt cream. Rich with malt flavor, the stout's first introductions come with the roastiness of burnt marshmallow, seared cream, molasses and toast.

As the ale unapologetically seeps into the tastebuds with a host of burnt sugars carrying a brazen espresso, cocoa and black walnut earthy maltiness. Hints of charred fruit come with a berry and vinous character while the barrel provides its own campfire whimsy with the nuttiness and wood spices of oak playing balancing role to the lingering sweetness and sharp roast. A firmly bittered late palate seems coffee and cocoa-like with hints of roast derived astringency adding as much intrigue as complication.

Hot and spicy, the beer's full body offers a roundness in taste and texture to keep the beer from any fusel nature. Its soothing nature of vanilla adds a velvety softness that becomes more noticable as the stout warms. A long linger of sweet char continues to play on the aftertaste in much the same burnt marshmallow way that the stout began.

On tap and from bottle. Enjoyed from bottle a bit more. Liked this warmer than most similar beers. The mouthfeel got much more substantial and silky smooth at the warmer temp. The flavor is rich and decadent very full flavored. With the finish having the most intense coffee I have tasted. Awesome.

What I LOVED about this beer was the mouthfeel. Light without being thin. It drank very smooth. The other impressive thing to note was the flavor. You can pick up individual things but it all comes together so well. As it warmed up in my glass, I got a lot more coffee flavor. Fantastic brew all around.

2016 vintage poured into shifted.

Appearance: Pours pitch black with a mocha colored head that sits and lingers. Small amount of bubbles that are almost imperceptible in the liquid slowly float up.

Smell: Oh, so much vanilla! A little bit of coffee, but this is a vanilla bomb for sure. Heavenly.

Taste: holy cow. This is vanilla with a splash of booze and coffee. I think I'm in love.

Mouthfeel: not thin at all. Slight coffee aftertaste. Vanilla too.

Overall: Clean up in aisle # my pants. Amazing.

Pours an opaque black with a tan head that fades fast, leaving a thin skiff on top of the dark brew.
Aroma is coffee, vanilla, chocolate, perhaps a bit of dark sugar or molasses.
Fabulous taste. For me, it begins with dark chocolate, then vanilla followed by fine roast coffee and booze. A lingering coffee/bitter chocolate note with a touch of dark fruit.
Smooth, nearly creamy on the tongue.
Outstanding beer!

Fantastic aroma of Bourbon, coffee, vanilla and chocolate. Good God, the taste is even better and this is one of the smoother, creamiest beers ever. Flavors are balanced and subdued, yet assertive (that makes sense to my taste buds, even if it sounds contradictory). Complex flavors of Bourbon, oak, vanilla, coffee and chocolate. Nothing bitter here, nothing heavily roasted. One of the best beers I have ever had.

On tap at THL
A-served in a mini pint glass-a slight ringing of a mocha lace atop a pitch black concoction.
S-cold aromas of vanilla, chocolate, dark roasted coffee and bourbon are evident
T-deep roasted dark flavors (heavily roasted malt, cocoa powder) abound. Plenty of vanilla, oaky bourbon in here to round it out.
M-fairly heavy bodied with a nice smoothness and a fair amount of slick. Warming in the Finish with a slight booziness.
O-first time trying this. It's a solid BB black ale. Lots of flavors, not too boozy. The vanilla and oak balances out the deep roasted dark chocolate, coffee and dark malts. I'd gladly have this again.
