Very Good
Notes: This German-style Doppelbock is a full bodied "meal in a glass" - a hearty lager perfect for the winter landscape. Malt forward flavors of bread and caramel dominate the subtle sweetness with a slight hint of chocolate in the finish. Pours a deep amber red with a full effervescent head. Prost!

This beer pours a deep brown with a moderate head. The aroma features notes of sweet bread, banana, milk chocolate, malted milk, and toffee. The flavor starts rich on the tongue with date, roast walnut, and cumin, then caramel and toffee mid palate, and then a dry finish of cocoa powder, bubblegum, and sweet bread. The mouthfeel is decently rich, with soft carbonation. Overall this is a really solid doppelbock - flavorful, rich but with a dry finish, classic in the necessary components, and completely compelling.

This is a good beer. A rich and hearty lager that is attractive and satisfying.
Dark towards brown but with distinctive red hues in the light. Dense off white head that settles in time and leaves some lacing.. An aroma full of rich toastiness but not pushing roast. Touches of fruit that are stronger in the taste. The toast hints of smoke too. Slight chocolate in the past is wrapped around the richness of the malt. Rich and full but not sweet in anyway. The caramel and toffee has a forward presence but never too much.
Full mouth feel in a lager with the right amount of lager carbonation to thin it out a bit.
This is a satisfying beer and I can't think of another local dopplebock that is as good as this.

L-Rich brown color with ruby highlights..clean, with nice clarity.

S-Malty...some melanoidins...also hints of dark fruits like plums and red grapes.

T-Nicely malty with some melanoidins, toffee, plums and raisins..Low hop level allows the malt to shine nicely. A light chocolate note comes in late.

F-Full side of medium bodied...clean yet a touch sticky which is appropriate for the style.

O-It is tough to find good US made doppelbocks. There are a few out there but I am very excited to have found another. Too bad it's a one-off. Regardless I'll enjoy this quality doppel while it is available.

Beautiful mahogany tone to this beer. Just a rimming of bubbly brown froth on top. Lacing is minimal. Some nice raisin, fig and date stuff going on with the nose. Light brown sugar as well. Pretty full flavored beer with molasses, prune, raisin and fig coming to mind. Bread pudding too. Body is a titch light checking in just below medium and the carbonation is appropriately on the low side. Alcohol is held in check, but at 7.7%, it should be. Solid effort.

Very dark amber color with a finger of dense head. Moderate amount of lacing left down the glass. Aroma of baked bread, caramel. graham crackers, and herbal hops. This doppelbock exhibits nice balance. Not overly sweet, not over hopped, and not boozy. Traditional flavors of bread, Munich malt, caramel malt, and a little grass in the finish. Not at all astringent. The body is not as full as I would of liked but it is nicely carbonated. The first in this series was just OK, the next two were poor, but this one hits all the right notes for me. Well done.

Poured from 16 oz can into shaker pint glass.
A: Pours a dark clear ruby amber with 1-2 inch light tan head with good retention.
S: Light sweet caramel malt, golden raisin, yeasty bread, with a hint of cinnamon and earthy spice.
T: Light cinnamon quickly followed by doughy raisin bread, moderately sweet caramel malt, and a hint of honey.
M: Light body. Quite sweet. Lingers on the palate decently.
D: Decent for style. I know what Bent Paddle can do...was hoping for a bit more. More body, more depth/complexity.

Pours a nice brown color. Head is off white, 1 finger, frothy, and retention is so so.
The nose is slightly malty, but not much else from it.
Taste is quite interesting. It has some chocolate. Some malt. Some raisin. Quite complex.
Maybe a bit more watery than I would expect, but still full bodied.
Delicious overall. I do recommended it.

My first from Bent Paddle, so I went on their website and was impressed by their dedication to their craft and community.

As for their doppelbock, I am partial to the style... being a malt-head. But compared to the best ones, Valve Jockey is too sweet. Maybe more hops will help. (Maybe something else needs to be adjusted in that mystical formula for balance I only know when I taste it.)

Valve Jockey Looks merely OK. Smells are classic, sweet malts and dark fruits. Tastes are like..... well, if you could drink raisin bread slathered with butter, then that would describe the sensation. In the mouth, I like sweet when it is dark and cool out... and this was that.

If I see Bent Paddle in Chicago again, I'll try it. This Doppelbock was good, but not good enough to have instead of the masters.

Poured from 12oz can into glass. Stamped on can bottom is '092-19'. This canning run did not include the "Valve Jockey" verbiage on the label.
Ruby brown colored body, with some garnet back lit highlights. Half a finger of light tan head, which finally results in a couple of islands and a thin ring. No lacing.
Aroma is of dark bread, caramel, and a whiff of chocolate.
Taste is pleasantly sweet, with the dark bread and the caramel. Towards the end there is a chocolate flavor. Limited bitterness, and the after taste is cola like.
Medium mouth feel, with a spicy feel. Good carbonation.
I let this beer warm up a bit before drinking, and this seems to bring out more of the dark bread yumminess and keeps the sweetness at bay. The chocolate at the end is a flavorful touch.

A decent Dunkel Doppebock. Some roasted malts, Some dark fruit and caramel. hints of chocolate and coffee . Fairly smooth, moderately sweet.

No it's not world class, but a good effort from a brewery that usually doesn't brew heavy lagers
