Poured into a Chuckanut pint glass. Pours a medium coppery amber with a half finger off-white head with good retention and light lacing. Big aroma of fresh hops, piney and dank, sweet caramel malt, tropical fruit, light citrus. Flavor of caramel malt, citrus and piney hops, tropical and lemon citrus fruit. There is an intense, quite pleasant estery fruit flavor in the finish that is unique to this beer. Medium bodied. A nicely made imperial IPA that starts off slightly mellow, but the hop flavors grow throughout the taste, culminating in strong, nicely melded piney and mixed fruit hops and a lingering peppey bitterness on the back of the tongue. The slightly sweet malt is an exceellent support for the flavors of the hops. Not as intense as many of the hop bomb IIPAs, but finishes as satisfying as any of them. The fruit and pine complexity of the hop bill is excellent and if some of it is due to the new hop, I hope we see more of it in the future. Bale Breaker is newly available in Western Washington and I look forward to the cans I picked up with this growler. So far the hype for this brewery is justified.
