Poured into a pint glass a cloudy orange with a foamy head. Lots of lacing. Smells of citrus with a hint of hops. Grapefruit and pine hit the tongue first with a bit of a bitter finish. Very juicy. Medium mouth that's a bit oily. Super good DIPA.

When it pours out of the can, it seems to have a noticeable thickness too it, as if it is a little more syrupy than a typical beer. This impression carries over to the rest of the appearance, as there is a small cap of foam for the head, and a clear sea of burnt amber liquid. It looks almost completely still, without a single bubble rising within it, which is a strangely eerie sight.

Aroma - The nose is dank and and filled with pine up front, with a sweet kick of malt behind. A toasted breadiness helps cut the hops.

Taste - With every punch that the hops lands, the malt is up to the task, to the point where I'm surprised that such caramel notes could be present in a DIPA. Normally that's not my bag, but it sort of works here.

Mouthfeel - Thick, resinous, and sticky. Yep, there's that syrup quality again.

Closing Arguments - While this is a DIPA, it isn't purely a hop bomb; the hops pop, but aren't the star at all. For those seeking a balance, this would be a nice choice. For those that just want the hops in their DIPAs, look elsewhere.

Appearance- Light amber in color with a slight golden hue. Pours a two finger foamy white head which dissipates slowly. Lots of lacing present as the beer goes down.

Aroma- Big hop aroma on this with pungent grapefruit, citrus, and garlic/onion.

Taste- First sip and flavor matches the intensity of nose. Pungent grapefruit and citrus are big at first along with a little bit of onion/garlic. Towards the finish the pungency lightens up and a juicy orange flavor shows up. A nice bready malt kicks in towards the end and helps out dry out the finish as well. The bitterness is very strong and lingers well into the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel- Definitely a big malt bill on this, but a dry finish cleans the palate of the malt and the hop oils. Very drinkable at 9/10 percent and not overly sweet.

Overall- Hoptometrist strikes a good balance between pungent hops and caramel/bready malt sweetness. Bitterness is usually an afterthought for me, but this really packs a punch. Great Dipa and after having this over the past year its clear the recipe continues to improve, especially in terms of adding hop flavor complexity and reducing malt sweetness.

Sweet, Boozy, Tropical, Bitter

From the can this is a hazy amber beer with a foamy head and lots of lace and stick. Quite sweet with sugary candy notes. Boozy breath with some peppery alcohol notes and a vodka-like edge. Tropical and citrus fruits, with some distinct ripe pineapple show up in the aroma, too. A bit chewy and viscous with prickly carbonation beneath. Floral, pine and bitter in flavor, it’s semi-astringent toward the dry finish. Bready, with a hint of caramel, The palate is oily, with some resin and leafy notes. On the boozier end of the DIPA spectrum, Hoptometrist blinds the palate with its bold and aggressive approach.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #113 (June 2016).

Pours a dark burnt orange color with a one finger fluffy off white head. Aroma is citrus, pine, resin, earth, grass. Taste follows with citrus, pine, resin, grass, earthy overtones with rye bread character, and a big, bracing smack of bitterness, with enough malt balance to keep it from going over the edge into only bitter. Mouthfeel is medium, coating, and just a touch oily, although with a drying quality that keeps it crisp. Overall, this is a very good dipa. Not quite the best I've had, but better than some that lean toward only booze and malt.

This is listed at 100 IBUs, just released 3 days ago!

25 oz bottle pours an effervescent caramel with 1 finger of ivory colored head. Viscious, keeps effervescent look, decent head retention & faint lacing

S: Pineapple, doughy, cakey, grapefruit; fades a touch at the end, a bit of boozeyness

T: Follows the nose, much tropical fruit up front, plus a little bit of pine & grapefruit. Much pineapple & grapefruit as this warms, more doughyness, pine & even a touch of aspirin. Finishes with a grapefruit assault plus aspirin, pine & pineapple & even a touch of pear & orange rind

MF: Chewy, subtle carbonation, very hop forward, but loads of malt& tropical fruits to balance it out fairly well. Boozy warmth presence

This beer punches its weight to be sure. Hopheads should love this. I wanted a little more balance, like it & would buy it again. In a rough style to make an impression, there are tons of great DIPAs out there. Only tried 2 of their brews, so far I am thrilled with these guys

Pours to a white head that lasts and laces. Orange copper and not much haze. Aroma is juicy and hoppy (citrus, pine, grass, spices and a hint of alcohol. Flavor is balanced. Intensely hoppy but not horribly bitter. Strong malt backbone. Noticeable EtOH in taste and mouthfeel. A very well executed double IPA. I'm more of a malt person so the balance is welcome.

Solid Oklahoma DIPA. Great balance between sweet malts and pineapply tropical bitter hops. Finishes very smooth for such a big beer. Spotted in 4-packs while visiting the in-laws one state up. I'll see if they even distribute this to Texas, as I'd get it again.
