The coppery amber color is quite attractive. Pours with a wispy foam in the Ciney snifter. Clear, light bodied and a little slick. The intense nose of ginger root pretty well takes over all the senses. It's a great smell but it turns this into something from the Thai kitchen rather than a beer.
There is a modest malty flavor quickly turns bitter and hoppy, than hotter and hotter as you sip. Tangy with carbonation and spice, and then slides into an acidity with no relief in sight. The hops show up as just very bitter since the ginger covers up any other aromatics. Very bitter aftertaste as your tongue tingles from the spiciness. If the claimed 40 IBUs is accurate, the ginger must be adding a lot of its own bitterness.
The ginger heat and hoppy bitterness add up to a harsh taste that makes this a tough brew to swallow. It's an intriguing combination that had to be tried, but I would really like to try it without the ginger. From the 32 oz growler filled at the brewery restaurant in Bellingham.

On tap at McGillicuddy’s Five Corners, Essex Junction, VT. The appearance was a slight copper color with a bar pour’s kind of slim white foamy head that gently dissipated at a good pace. The aroma blended some rye sweet and spiciness flowing on into some lime, and then underneath the ginger. The flavor seemed to hit in the spicy department first and then the ginger and lime came through somewhat. Decent combined aftertaste flowing on in through the aftertaste and into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Good carbonation. ABV felt fine. Ginger and rye don’t distract in too much spicy harshness along my tongue, felt good for the most part. Overall, since I’m a fan of ginger and rye, I liked it for the most part. Did the lime assist in the enjoyment of this one? Well, I guess so. I’d have this one again.

This is exactly what you are looking for if you are hankering for a ginger focused ale. The Rye notes provide a spicy backend to complement the herby rootsy elements going on here. All ginger as you might expect

I had this beer on-tap in a narrow pint glass at the brewery.
Appearance: rich orange hue with a dash of haze and a finger of frothy white foam. Quite attractive.
Smell: ginger, sweetness and more ginger. Did I mention ginger? It's crazy.
Taste: ginger atop a toasty malt base, with more ginger. I mean, if you like ginger, it is great. The rye doesn't really come though. Gingery.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a strong, smooth carbonation and concomitant creaminess. I dig it.
Overall: this beer is seriously 8 times more gingery than the strongest ginger ale. If you like ginger, then it's great.

I'm a beer enthusiast more than an expert so bear with me.
A: Pleasant golden-orange hue, not much head but visible carbonation and some lacing.
S: Very noticeable ginger smell mingling with citrus (I love ginger so very appealing to me!).
T: The flavor is much more balanced than the upfront smell might lead you to believe, though the ginger is certainly front and center. The rye mixes nicely with the spice and creates a highly-drinkable product perfect for a cloudy mild weather day like many we experience here in the NW.
M: Somewhat zesty carbonation that suits the flavor well and leaves the mouth feeling refreshed.
O: I don't have much experience with Rye Beer (I usually go for porters and stouts) but I'm definitely inspired to try some more after this one. This beer would probably not work for people who don't like ginger but I assume if you order something called "Ginger Rye" you're a fan of ginger. Overall I was highly satisfied!
