Coffee BrownCoffee Brown

Brewed by:
Saint Archer Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Made in collaboration with award winning Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, the beer gets its back bone by using Maris Otter as the base with a triad of chocolate and crystal malts, which impart a smooth and rich malt character. We infused that with a special Kenyan Makwa coffee using a cold extraction method.

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a everted tulip.

Nice dark chestnut brown color, fairly opaque. 1/2" khaki head that fades to a ring. Some spotty lacing.

Fruity, roasty coffee beans on the nose, tangy dark chocolate. A little toffee. Nice.

Coffee leads on the taste as well, roasty and sharp, followed by some bitter chocolate and a little butterscotch. Ends with some dark fruit and tobacco. Malty tastes but it is overall pretty dry. Ends with some bitterness. Complex, layered.

On the light side of medium bodied, a bit high in carbonation. Ends clean and dry.

The malt profile and coffee interact well and I like the complexity. Could use some more maltiness and body though.

Appearance - Pours a deep, dark ruby brown with a tan, finger width head. Fair retention gives way to a broken, somewhat barren surface. Miniscule spots of lacing with poor stick.

Smell - Aroma is very nearly that of cold, iced coffee to go along with light hints of caramel and chocolate.

Taste - Follows the nose. Iced coffee, caramel and chocolatey characters dominate upfront and throughout. A vague, berry-like acidic bite creeps into the finish and lingers in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with fair amounts of carbonation. Smooth, slightly silky texture.

Overall - Solid coffee beer. Nothing truly amazing, but I might be tempted to buy it again from time to time.

Pours a finger and half of tan head on a black body.
The aroma is fresh coffee grounds, dark chocolate and a little raspberry.
The taste balanced, nice malty sweetness and coffee bitterness.
The texture is crisper.
Quite enjoyable.

22 oz. bomber poured into a snifter glass. Pours a clear deep brown with some mahogany highlights and a half inch cap of foam. Retention is poor however, settling out to stillness in seconds.

Smelll is profound of roast coffee and was noted immediately upon cracking the bottle. Bit one sided and perhaps overdone I would say, depending on your coffee tolerance in a beer that is. For me it's a bit much however, with some light chocolate and caramalized fruit deep in the back.

Taste is slick and slightly oily, though in part surely due to a lack of carbonation. Touch of fruit lingers for a while then closes with a flash of dried fresh roasted coffee. Feel is a bit thin and watery, leaving a bit to be desired. And yet again a lack of carbonation seems to be the issue. Perhaps intentional in that regard. Too much like coffee for this non coffee drinking fan of coffee to a degree..

22oz bottle into a Founders snifter:

Pours a deep, dark brown. Looks darker than many porters I've had. Frothy khaki brown head dissipates pretty quickly, typical for a coffee beer. Aroma is pretty coffee forward. Lots of berries and fruitiness from the coffee which is not unexpected for a Bird Rock cold brew (hint: excellent coffee selection here). Taste follows nose pretty closely. Roasted malts interplay with the coffee quite well. A nice snappy bitterness and acidity from the coffee really takes on the palate. Again lots of fruitiness from the coffee. Mouthfeel is medium to slightly light. A good coffee brown ale/porter that I would buy again.

Looks like a decent brown ale...yeah yeah yeah. But the aroma...the aroma! Wow. Like the first time Raul went out with his baby mama and she spruced herself up like a christmas day ham - all around excellence. Beautiful cocoa, malt and coffee aromas follow along into the taste. Mouthfeel is quite thin, but as a whole, this thang is pretty sexi.

Smells amazing, tastes pretty good, and feels simply aite. Not über status, but pretty good.
