For brewers, creativity is at the forefront of what we do. In this case, our Imperial Porter and Imperial Stout have spoken, and led us to create our sophomore Tusk & Grain release. Boasting big notes of chocolate, roast and caramel, there was only one ingredient left to complete this beer: toasted coconut. This beer will take you somewhere, and we hope you enjoy the journey.

Poured from a white wax-topped 16.9 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip. 11.54% version/vintage.
L: Inky black pour with 2 fingers of foamy mocha colored head. Lasts awhile... outstanding lacing.
S: Roasted grains, coconut, and cocoa.
T.F: Semi-sweet chocolate up front. Roasted grains and sugars... subtle coconut. A little vanilla and marshmallow... some balance from the roast. Not picking up much bourbon... more cocoa. Smooth and creamy. Medium bodied and a little sticky on the tongue. Some almond joy finish. Booze very well hidden.
O: A solid Imperial Stout with coconut. Could use a little more of the advertised bourbon character but overall a very enjoyable brew.

Taster pour at Native Son Alehouse in Santa Ana, CA.
Like a tropical voyage, I am alive. Like waking up with the bright sun above me, and a scantly clad pirate babe on my side, I am feeling this. Taste is fairly robust with beautiful barrel age and coconut (as advertised). Feel is a lil light than this player would want, but it’s not bad!
Ok, I’m out.

About a year old when I had a taster. It was very heavy whiskey forward with little coconut and a thinned out body. Don’t know how it was fresh.

Poured from fridge temp. Pours motor oil black with a good amount of light brown head. Nose is full of beautiful coconut notes with some nice fudge, marshmallow, bourbon, and roasted chestnuts. Flavor is bitter upfront, with a nice bourbon presence. Smooths right off with a good amount of coconut and dark chocolate. Some cherries and blackberries on the aftertaste. Marshmallow, coffee, and tobacco round things off on the back end. Mouthfeel is nice and creamy. This is the 11.54% version, and the alcohol is not noticeable. Overall, a really interesting and tasty stout.
12-30-19 - update with the 13.4% version. Absolutely amazing. Very comparable to the lower ABV version, but more robust flavors. Lot of deep chocolate notes, with tons of coconut and marshmallow. So creamy! Alcohol still not noticeable.

Had one of these, as the last beer for all of March Madness 2018. Like, $14 off the shelf 500ml, easy call here. Pours motor oil (used) black with a 1/3" brown head. Aroma is exactly as the label implies, there's bourbon and coconut here. The roasted malt is less noticeable.
The taste is just a reliable bourbon barrel aged banger shelfie. The type of beer that makes chasing shit or standing in line seem dipshit-esque. The coconut is very prominent but without being sugary. The bourbon is complimentary and sturdy, neither too heavy or too feint. Its not bitter or acrid, rather smooth. Hides the alcohol very well. Nice chocolate notes, again, without relying on sweetness/sugar to do its thing.
I love how this beer is so damn reliable, available and affordable. Makes no sense to chase Prop or whatever analogous beer is out there like this one. Very legit.

Pours oily black with a thick tan head on heavy pour. Nose is of chocolate malt, dark roast coffee and light coconut. As far as taste goes this one is superb. Huge coconut flavor, almost gritty like the flaked coconut is in the beer. Smooth milky chocolate, light vanilla and coffee along with some char from both malt and barrel. Bourbon is not in your face but there is enough there to take notice. Medium body and slick. Good beer.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a half finger brown head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted and biscuit malt, coconut, vanilla and light cocoa. Flavor is dark toasted malt, coconut, mild bourbon, light milk and dark chocolate and light vanilla. Nice residual malt, chocolate and coconut in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess and nice mouth feel. A well made coconut stout with clear coconut flavor, but deftly light without dominating. Good malt body with chocolate notes and light bourbon. Well balanced, but a little boozy. Except for being a little hot, they nailed this one. Both bourbon and coconut can be forward in this style, but everything plays well together here. I liked their Tusk & Grain wee heavy last year and like this one too. I was never excited about their standard stable of beer, but their barrel project seems to do a great job. This is a Tusk & Grain project stout and the ABV is a little over 11%, so a bit lighter than the original version. Really doesn't need to be any bigger.
