We love IPAs. There's no two ways about it. So when we were tasked with designing a new beer for summer, we had to make another IPA. This Imperial IPA is built around things that are close to our hearts. An intentionally simple malt bill provides a blank space for El Dorado, Simcoe and Citra hops to give notes of lemon, citrus, stone fruit, pear and passionfruit. Let this fruit basket be your juice cleanse.

Bottle of unknown age into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Pours a bright orangish golden yellow with two fingers of variable density white head that left moderate lacing. WOW, what a tropical nose! Followed by subtle hints of citrus. Taste was a slight inversion of the nose, more citrus forward but still plenty of tropical attributes. Finish was a bit dry, mild bitterness and a fair bit of astringency. Mouthfeel was thinner for a Imperial IPA, carbonation on the moderate side, and a smidge of alcohol burn as it warmed. Really wish they bottle dated, as this is a solid packaged Imperial IPA, though I still prefer their Mosaic IPA.

Undated bomber into a Duvel tulip at fridge temp.
Look: barely hazy golden straw, medium head that dissipates almost instantly.
Smell: peach, lemon zest, coconut.
Taste: too-sweet lemondrop candy, guava, coconut, romaine lettuce. Finish is clean, with lingering mineral bitterness.
Feel: medium body, slightly syrupy, moderately dry. Not super-drinkable, but doesn't impair drinkability either.
Overall: this just doesn't quite do it for me. Something in the hop combo doesn't work for my palate. Reminds me of an inelegant Bodhi clone.

Pretty much everything Saint Archer does is good and I hate to say that with them selling out. First time I saw this one in stores and I had to get it. Expecting it to be in the 4.15-to-4.25 range.
Poured a medium yellow hazy color with 4-to-5 fingers of off-white, rocky head. Some bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Outstanding sporadic foamy lacing. Excellent retention. (Sight - 4.00)
Smelled a nice mix of juicy tropical (2/3) and citrus (1/3). Specifically got tangerine, sugary grapefruit, stone fruit, prickly pear, peach, lemon, passion fruit, floral and hints of pineapple. Bottle reads El Dorado, Simcoe and Citra, but I’m really only getting Citra with a touch of Simcoe or El Dorado. This is nice on the nose. (Smell - 4.50)
Taste wasn’t quite as good, but still follows the nose with the juicy flavors. Still tropical dominated, but more balanced with citrus than the nose. Getting stone fruit, tangerine, sharp bitter grapefruit, peach, pear, lemon zest, pineapple and pulpy citrus. Definitely getting El Dorado and spicy Simcoe here with the Citra. Boozy, but doesn’t quite taste like 9 percent. (Taste - 4.25)
Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Lively-to-average carbonation. Abrupt, bitter, juicy finish. (Feel - 3.75)
A very nice double IPA. Man Saint Archer does some good stuff. Not sure I can get over selling out to one of the big guys though. Then again I did buy this beer, so… (Overall - 4.00)
