And, Oh! What a shit show parking is; 2pm Sunday anyway. Add the pride parade 2 blocks to the south and the street closure circumventing becomes an arduous adventure. But undeterred are we, as this is a bar I’ve wanted to see. Strangelove’s (or how I learned to stop worrying and love the beer)…

Vestibule, and in, a long narrow space. Straight white marble topped bar rounded on the corner, panel base trimmed, and seating for 14 on hightop wood chairs off to the right. Barback is center pieces sectioned, with tiered booze & bottles fronting mirrored panels. A single flat above center and horizontal boards sit to both sides showing Quizzo, happy hour & brunch hours, and events. Glassware shelved cabineted and open below the barback. A pair of handpumps on the bar and a row of 16 tap handles sunken below nondescript.

Barback wall is gray, painted beigey yellow up front, something lighter to the rear, and the far wall a long one of brick. A pair of ‘strange’ and ‘love’ paintings on the wall and some light pieces otherwise. Wood plank floorings, and rafter & beam ceilings with duct work along the far wall. Large panel windows up front and to the front corner. Spinny top drop lamps over the bar, track spots, and 2 chandelier lighting pieces up front.

A dozen 2 seat tables for the push together as needed or want behind us on a shared benching row along the wall, 4 hightops in the step up rear space, and a secret shared table up there around the backside.

16 taps, more than ½ the taps are given to PA play (Sterling Pig Pata Negra, Victory Air Drop Pils, Neshaminy Creek Dummes Dunkel Lager, Nodding Head Ich Bin Ein Berliner Weiss, Sly Fox O’Reilly’s Irish Stout, Saint Benjamin Yardarm Saison, Stickman First World Problems, Tired Hands We Are All Infinite Energy Vibrating At The Same Frequency, Free Will/Strangelove Eden), and the remainder a mix of regional (Captain Lawrence Effortless Grapefruit IPA, Allagash White), regions in other time zones (Goose Island Sofie, Sierra Nevada/Mahrs Oktoberfest, Almanac Mandarina), and countries (Mikkeller Spontanlemon), and the obligatory cider (Big Hill Cider Farms Standard). Lest we forget the Conshohocken Zone of Danger and 2SP ASAP IPA on cask.

I started with the Victory Air Drop Pils (lovely) and was eyeing up another beer. Opted obviously for the Tired Hands We Are All Infinite Energy Vibrating At The Same Frequency, which was all chamomile and something else that is not the Infinite Energy I know, so I think we’re crossed somewhere. The Mikkeller Spontanlemon was interesting but sour as actual fuck, so no. Settled on the Sterling Pig Pata Negra, a Schwarzbier, and delicious.

It’s a very good list. There are 5 Saisons, true. And 5 beers come in at 4.5% or less so sessiony things abound (somewhere, Lew felt happy and doesn’t know why). And there are bottles. 7 of them listed although I cannot recall what they are. I can tell you what’s not listed, and that’s the Russian River Consecration I can see on the bar (well, hello dare).

I could have entertained a third beer but there’s crazytalk of heading up to the Reading Terminal Market for a goddamn roast pork sandwich at DiNic’s (we will get up there to find the place already closed and dine on lesser sandwiches of sadness).

Chill Sunday fact finding mission. Music is a mash up of Pixies, Temptations, Stereolab, Al Green, Buzzcocks, Dinosaur Jr… Good hang.

I like this place because its location is unexpected, like what a great find. Its easy to park with a plethora of garages, and its not in a block loaded with other bars and customers, its near the hospitals in a quieter part of center city. Food menu is too limited with a koreanish trend I want to say. But I liked the salad with black kale and grilled chicken. I'll be back here no doubt.

Bar service was pretty bad; I felt bad for the bartender, she was the only person upstairs with a hoard of people. Eventually relief came, but that was when we were leaving. Will try the food next time, too.

Nice place, somewhere sterile quasi-post-modern atmosphere, replacing the odd, often-changing, and often police-raided Boilermaker (see also: Farmer's Cabinet). Small space, but they use it well. Buddy Holly glasses and neck beards everywhere. I've never had a problem with the service, and the beer selection is always at least somewhat decent, and they get some good events as well. I think I've only ever gotten snack-type food here, but it was all pretty good. Not a place I normally hang out, and not the most distinctive bar in Philly, but worth checking out.

I was riding my bike around Center City and flew right by this place. It's only 11:45 in the morning, but it is not too early for a beer if the bar is open!

I was the only costumer inside, which always feels kind of weird. But the folks here are super nice. Sooner than you can say "Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier", we were all taking names and talking about Philly restaurants and bars and the South Philly 'hoods we live and play in. I love this town.

The 19 taps have a bit of everything, from RR Damnation to Cafe Racer 15, Founders Porter, Jolly Luciernaga, New Belgium, Left Hand, Sierra Ovila and a cask. There is also a small bottle menu with some rarities and big beers.

I did not have food this time but will definitely go back and try some. They have a 14-dollar lunch menu that looks great and offers a lot of veggie/vegan options.

Great first experience at Strangelove's, looking forward to many more!
