I picked up a bottle of Traveler Beer Co's Illusive Traveler Shandy last week for $1.69 at Boyne Country Provisions. I was looking for a good warm weather beer and since I've haven't seen this beer around locally I thought I would take a chance on it, so lets see how it goes. Notched best by august 2014. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- The label looks good, it's got an odd, but cool pop art like vibe to it and I think it's a little eye catching. It poured a cloudy golden orange color that took on more of a milky burnt orange color when held to the light followed by a finger and a half off bubbly off white head that quickly died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it left hardly any spotty lacing behind. This is a pretty average looking shandy, I wish the head and retention were a little better.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of sweetness and it's followed by a big grapefruit juice aroma that's just a little artificial smelling and it's followed b some citrus like aromas in the background with some citrus rind and slight orange juice like aroma coming through, There's pretty much no malt flavors and absolutely no hops flavors, it doesn't smell like it has any beer in it and from the aroma alone it might be confused as a wine cooler. I wasn't a big fan of the aroma, I wish there was no noticeable beer aspect.

T- The taste seems to be pretty similar to the aroma and it starts off with a higher amount of sweetness followed by the grapefruit still being the first to show up and it still has a little bit of that artificial aspect that I got in the aroma and when mixed with the sweetness it still retains that wine cooler like aspect. Up next comes the malts which just barely show up and they just impart a slight grainy flavor with a very slight bit of doughy yeast showing up in the background. On the finish there wasn't any bitterness just some sweetness with some more of that citrus and slightly artificial grapefruit flavors. This wasn't a great tasting beer, it was nice that there was actually a slight beer tastes to it, but it wasn't too noticeable and the sweetness and slightly artificial grapefruit were too dominating.

M- Fairly smooth, fairly crisp, a little refreshing, slightly cloying, on the thicker side of being light bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel was nice, but i wish the sweetness wasn't a little cloying.

Overall I didn't care for this beer and I thought it was a below average example of a shandy, it really lacked the balanced that the better Shandys have and it felt like i was given some overly sweetened fruit juice with a little bit of alcohol in it. This beer didn't have the best drinkability, it was fairly smooth, fairly crisp, a little refreshing, slightly cloying, not too filling, but the taste didn't do a good job of holding my attention and I started to to get tired of it after half a bottle so I think that would be around my limit for this beer, it was a little refreshing on a hot day, but it lacked the balance that I look for in the style. What I liked the most about this beer was the mouthfeel, it was the highlight of this beer and it worked well with it. What I liked the least about this beer was the balance and high sweetness, they both really needed some work. I wouldn't buy this beer again and I wouldn't recommend it either, it's not hard to find a much better Shandy. All in all I didn't like this beer, it just didn't do it for me and even on a hot afternoon it wasn't as great as I was hoping it to be. This didn't make for the best first impression for The Traveler beer co., but I might still try more of their beers. Better luck next time guys, this one needs some work.

Sampled last night on 2/18/15. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a vintage pilsner glass.

Brew pours a hazy yellow-orange in color with a thin white head. Some light spotty lacing is seen when sipped. The aroma is of light wheat with citrus zest. Bit more going on with the taste as you can taste the lemon zest along with the red grapefruit juice in the mix. Nothing over powers anything else. Nice taste and goes down easy. No bitter or harshness in the finish, just a slight tartness as would be excepted. Overall a good brew.

There's a line between Shandy and Radler and this presents a Shandy in a Radlers clothing. It drinks incredibly light and easy, almost like a juice, but has a crisp carbonated feel. It is fruity with huge grapefruit sweet and sour, sugary lemon and tart lime. It drinks and tastes like a Radler but it's 4.5 ABV. So you can shotgun this on a hot day and it will affect your brain.

This is something really different and I liked it! I have had many fruit type beers that are nothing but sweet and kind of gross. I'm going to try to drink it all summer if I can find it again in the great northwest.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a bright yellow color and a cloudy consistency. No real head or lacing to speak of.

S: Not surprisingly, a whole lot of grapefruit in the aroma, but not much else.

T: Like the aroma, the flavor was dominated by grapefruit, with some malt in the finish. If you like grapefruit, then you will like the flavor of this beer. Not a complex taste, but enjoyable.

F: An average amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Light-bodied.

O: It's no surprise that this is a polarizing beer (that seems to happen a lot with fruit beers), but this one isn't as bad as some ratings would have you believe.

From the Traveler Beer Company website: 2-row malted barley, malted wheat, Hallertau hops, real grapefruit, 7 BUs. The label on the bottle states that the beer is brewed with lemon peel.

A moderate pour from a longneck into a Pilsener glass brings about a good head of white foamy head with good retention. The beer is a murky golden-orange with high carbonation and looks very attractive in the glass.

The aroma is primarily of grapefruit but with a touch of floral hoppiness. The flavor is also very grapefruit-forward but with some earthy bitterness to go with the sweetness and tang. Also noticeable is the lemon and probably also some citrus notes from the hops which also lend a slight grassy note. Although the beer seems rather sweet, it has a semi-dry finish and isn’t too cloying. I don’t notice any outwardly fake flavors, and the beer is easy drinking.

This is a good idea for a shandy and would go great as a lunch beer on a hot day.

Let me sum it up as a one dimensional . Artificial grapefruit taste with no complexity. Slow drinking and a bit of an insult to my palate.

Don't expect a complex beer when trying this. It's a refreshing, light-bodied beer with soda-like carbonation that you can slug effortlessly. Awesome for hot days, picnics, mowing the lawn, and just about anything else!!

Appearance: Cloudy with a retained 1/2 inch slightly off-white head

Smell: Definite citrus aroma dominated by the grapefruit. Smells like the pith of the fruit with some orange as well. No hint of alcohol and not much hop presence.

Taste: Sweetness right off the bat with a low amount of carbonation. Smooth and silky from the wheat. Tart and with a slight tart bitterness that lingers.

Mouthfeel: low carbonation and wheat make for a silky smooth mouthfeel.

Overall: A nicely balanced and authentic tasting shandy. A little overly sweet for me in the front but calms down nicely in the middle and back. Refreshing and one of the better shandies I've had.

Draft pour; looks like a hazy unfiltered wheat beer but color is orange with hint of red grapefruit. Little to no head. Sweetness of fruits as well as bread (yeast) and malts. Folks, it's not a Sculpen but the taste is refreshing. Modest carbonation with grapefruit in front and smooth finish. A nice beer Ina warm day.

Hazy yellow color with a small head that recedes relatively quickly leaving a half inch of lacing. Just enough haziness to look like something more than a malt beverage. Aroma of candied grapefruit that feels just a little artificial. Body of slightly tart grapefruit before a slightly sweetened grapefruit ending. Fairly straight forward taste that the label hinted at. Very smooth taste that didn't match the aroma. Light body with light carbonation. No aftertaste. Very quaffable and refreshing.
Definitely a summer porch beer or lawn mowing beer that is light and refreshing and easy to have a couple of.
