Got this one from a trade with Siddfinch a while back. Cheers man!
From a 750 into a snifter
Bottled: November 12, 2014
Bottle 131 of 150
Cellar Series vol. 1
APPEARANCE: Very slow foamer here. Always a turn off. Pours out transparent black and yields a 2 finger, slightly looser, fizzier, foamy tan head with decent retention. Fizzes down to a full wispy cap. Black body with some carbonation evident. Slight wisp and ring remain with some touches of lacing down the glass. The foamy head and dangerous beginning were a bit of a let down. Decent looking for the style, but Resolute is actually a good looking imperial stout and this is the least impressive of the four bottle set.
SMELL: Chili pepper notes with smoked peppers and notes of spices on the nose. Some vanilla, sweet cream, milk chocolate and light hints of cinnamon as well, though I don’t think they were used in the recipe. Touches of oak and bourbon under the peppers and vanilla aromas as well. Like all the Resolute variants this year, this one smells pretty nice.
TASTE: Smoky peppers and oak up front. Flavors of vanilla and sweet cream as well as a hint of milk chocolate at the swallow with a big finish of hot, spicy chilies and oak at the swallow. Bold and lingering finish of spicy hot chilies, some vanilla cream, milk chocolate, some toffee flavors, oak, and a touch of spirit on the palate. The chilies are rather forthcoming but seem to negate the overly woody and harsh alcohol flavors of the other variants.
PALATE: Medium body and higher levels of carbonation. A touch light. Prickly and a little harsh on the palate, goes down rough with a good burn at the swallow and finishes a touch mouth-coating. Lots of alcohol and chili heat linger, kind of competing for center stage. This is a little hard to swallow, literally.
OVERALL: This might actually be the best of the four beers, though unfortunately that isn’t necessarily saying much. The peppers, while perhaps being too overwhelming in the flavor profile, certainly add a nice touch to the nose and help to mask the overly harsh lumber and wood flavor, as well as the harsh spirit character lent by the barrels. Then again, the prickly body and harsh burn means I won’t be rushing through this bottle very quickly. In any case, thanks again for the trade SiddFinch. These sets are always piles of fun.

Pies a dark brown with minimal head. Nose is chili and smoke forward with heavy notes of chipotle and cayenne. Some hints of oak and vanilla peak through, but the nose is not screaming that it's barrel aged. Flavor is sweet up front with cocoa, vanilla, and oak followed by a strong burn from the peppers. The heat gains momentum with each sip and goes slightly overboard. Mouthfeel is medium, perhaps a chewier body would hold up the heat a little better.

The only flavor that lingered in the finish was the heat. I had high expectations for this one but it fell short.
