Pours a fluid black with a trace a head that disappears as it's poured. Plum & bourbon or bourbon & plum on the nose, smoothly balanced. Taste follows nose... Creamy... really nice.

Not traditionally my favorite style, but really enjoyed this beer from them. Great anniversary beer. Not to sweet, but just right in my opinion. Aged in Resolute barrels.

Big, big beer that is very bourbon barrel forward. Plum flavor with bourbon upfront that finishes off with a nice hop and malt backbone. Top notch ba barleywine but very boozy and hot. I had one fresh and plan to age one for a year or two, and I'm sure that will tune down heat. Not a big fan of barleywines but this one is a beer not to miss.

Appearance: pours a solid mahogany color. very dark except the slightest hints at garnet hues can just barely be seen through light. almost no head but a small layer of tan bubbles form, they quickly fall away leaving just a thin lacing behind. alcohol legs as it swirls around the glass.

Smell: strong malty sweetness. caramels and hinting darker towards toffee. dark fruits. super boozy and with a hint of vanilla.

Taste: opens with dark fruits and an almost belgian ale style toffee. a booziness arises and comes off fairly harsh at times. more sweet malts filter through with caramel and toffee. towards the end I get hints of a roasted quality along with a strong barrel character, ranging from oak, cinnamon and vanilla. ever so slight bourbon. some hop character is mixed in but is hard to tell through the alcohol and barrel.

Mouthfeel: light for the style and extremely low carb. sticky and with a strong alcohol heat. some lingering bitterness from either hops or astringent alcohol.

Overall: solid. and I really appreciate the 2nd barrel usage of a beer I love. but I don't think this barleywine was the ideal candidate for what I hoped for this to be. The alcohol can come of fairly astringent and the body is very light and undercarbed. all in all i'd give it another go but nothing to go crazy for.

Great effort by Three Bros. I did think it was a tad bit thin, but the flavor was fantastic. Tons of caramel and raisins up front, followed by some bourbon. The 3rd use Resolute barrels really made their mark on this beer. It gave the beer a stout like quality that I don't really get with the Bourbon County Barleywine. Solid Barleywine for sure.
