A: This poured a hazy copper with some white head.
S: It smelled like faint citrus zest and pine hops, with a little sweet earthy malt.
T: It tasted like copper and earthy barley, with some citrus zest and pine. It had a mostly clean bitter aftertaste.
M: It was thick with a little carbonation. Excellent big body.
D: This was a decent IPA, but the scent and taste weren't anything great. The body was nearly perfect, and the finish was smooth enough. So it was easy to drink. Really not bad, but just another forgettable brew in the end.

A friend sent this beer over for me to try, he generally sends good stuff so here we go, gonna join the brotherhood. Decent looking beer with that great IPA smell. Good flavor without the bitter bite, easy to drink IPA, enjoyed this beer very much. Will certainly pick up again depending upon cost. Good beer to take a run at.

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Bottle date on label is MFG2014.01.14. Purchased at Market Street Wineshop (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Deep amber with 1-finger of light beige, tightly bubbled head with average retention and skimpy lacing.

S: Way too heavy on the caramel malts with a lot of burned caramel notes, some toasted notes. This one borders on hoppy red ale with this aroma profile. The hops notes are resinous, earthy, and herbal, lightly floral. There are some mild fruity yeast esters and there is no alcohol in the aroma.

T: The flavor also borders on hoppy amber ale versus American IPA, mainly because the flavor isn't hoppy enough. Flavorwise, I might even say this fits English IPA better for all of the caramel malt character and earthy, herbal, resinous hopping, with a little bit of pine. There is yeast character as well, which adds the only real fruity components, and the alcohol is not hot but provides an edgy bitterness. Not a bad tasting beer, but way too heavy on the caramel sweetness.

M: The heaviness of the caramel malt give this beer too much body, which coupled with the low carbonation, again fits it as an English IPA.

O: After such a great experience with Great Outdoors, a very refreshing and easy-drinking, balanced APA, Hoptimization is a bit of a let-down.

Poured 12 oz bottle dated 11/21/13 into New Belgium globe

A-Pours cloudy amber with a two finger off-white head that dissipates quickly leaving lots of lacing.

S-Aroma is grapefruit, caramel, herbal hops and grain.

T-Flavor is grapefruit, caramel, pine resin an hops.

M-Mouthfell is OK, but not balanced. The hops were bitter and lots of caramel, but they didn’t go together.

O-Overall a okay IPA. Glad I got only one.

Good level of clarity on this one. Nice frothy and thick crème head too. Resin heavy nose. Flavor brings a good level of the same. Earthy piney resin. This is a nice easy drinker, but nothing overly showy or mind-blowing. Decent example of an east coast IPA.

The first time I experienced Hoptimization was on tap at Landsdowne Resort in Leesburg, VA. It was a delight at the time because until then I had been finding most IPAs found while dining out verrrry sweet... Much the same as it was on draught, the bottled seems appropriately hop-blessed without trying to tamp down bitterness with excess sugar. In fact the bitterness is welcome following a piney inhale of aroma... Foam crest lingers in the glass. "Keep 'em cold, drink 'em in a glass" is printed on the label: well-noted, 3 Brothers! I'm only sorry I had such difficulty searching for your name with "3" vs. "three" and not being able to remember if it's "Hoptimator" or "Hoptimizer" there are too many clever pun-derived names out there. Not what I'd call the Ultimate hop-stacked experience but definitely one I'd look forward to during the cold season when we're over-inundated with Xmas cookie exchanges and gingerbread brews and the last thing one wants from one's IPA is another sugared-up concoction. Bravo and please bring on more of the same!

Pours clear and medium gold. A nice off-white head puffs up before dying away to a light coating of bubbles after a few minutes. The aroma is lacking. There's just not much there. Light hops, some citrus and pine. A bit of caramel malt. Some neutral yeastiness. The taste is similarly underwhelming. Some caramel malt flavor and mild generic American hoppiness. It's relatively dry, which is nice, but it needs some flavor to fill things out. Mouthfeel is fine, light with average carbonation. This bottle should be pretty fresh - it's less than a month from the bottling date - but it really doesn't seem quite right. I wouldn't be surprised if the beer was markedly better on tap and in future bottling runs. Great Outdoors showed promise, and I'm a bit surprised that this is a step back.

Picked this one up the other night on a whim. Poured a deep amber color into a pint glass, head is minimal and dissipated quickly. Not very much nose to it, a bit of citrus. Mouth-feel was a tad watery. The malt was dominant over the hops, not very much bitterness to it at all.

Overall: About average. I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to try it, if there's other IPA's available that you enjoy, you're safer going with them. Would drink again if my options were extremely limited.

Hoptimization IPA is a nice take on the West Coast style IPA. It's decently bitter, and has a pleasantly earthy aroma. It pours an amber color, and has a great citrus flavor. I think it is one of the best beers they've had on tap since they opened.
