Thanks Joel for taking me to this joint.

A: rich brown with tan head.

S: rich caramel and vanilla. Bourbon character as well as some light stone fruit.

T: surprisingly sweet with roasted notes. Caramel and vanilla dominate with hints of spice and a nutty finish.

M: meeting thick with lower carbonation, and very sweet finish.

O: overall, just a damn fine boozy sweet treat.

Poured from a bomber bottle into a red wine glass. The bottle did not have a date listed, but I bought it in Raleigh, NC in around New Years Day 2022, and I have no reason to think it is older than 2021. The label lists 9.0% ABV.

L - Color is a beautiful ruby, with great clarity. There was some light foam when I poured the bottle, but it quickly disappeared until there was no head or lacing at all. That's not unheard of for a barrel-aged beer, but it still detracts some from the appearance.

S - Aroma is more hop-forward than I expected, with herbal, spicy and woody hops asserting themselves. Behind that is some barrel character, with some oak, cherry and even lower vanilla. Malt is only noticeable as a vague bready note in the finish. The impression is very fresh, without any notable oxidation or "old" notes, but it is lacking in malt that I would expect for the style.

T - The flavors match the aromas well, with herbal and spicy hops dominating early in the palate. Later some warm, bready and slightly sweet malt arrives, leaving some lingering sweetness in the finish. Also near the finish I get the oak note from the barrel, and again some cherry character.

F - Medium body with low, slightly tingly carbonation. Low to medium hops bitterness that just holds off the sweetness a bit. Some definite heat from the alcohol, but I wouldn't describe the beer as boozy.

O - This is a nice barleywine. I take it from the description on the label that it is meant as an English style. It is crisper and has more hops character than is typical for that style, but the hops bitterness is also not as assertive as in an American variant. I would describe this as somewhat of a hybrid between the two barleywine styles. The barrel aging has only seemed to contribute some oak and maybe the cherries, not as much as in some examples, but subtle and pleasant.

2018 bottle.Bottled in December 2018.Label says 9.3% and 10.2% abv...?Pours into a stemmed glass a rich deep amber with a half finger lighter beige colored head atop that left a full ring of lace behind as it settled.Aromas are slightly muted but pleasant enough, mainly berries and caramel, definitely malt driven.A slicker feel in the mouth and not as full as I was expecting.Flavors are fruity and slightly cakey with an alcohol burn in the finish, not much layered complexity.Ehh was expecting a bit more here, really just an average barleywine here....In my opinion.

On tap at the brewery.
Cloudy reddish brown pour, with clingy foam around the edges.
Wet grain aroma with some notes of nutmeg. Caramel and maple in the background.
Toffee sweetness followed immediately by a drying spice. Brown sugar and butter (not diacetyl, but more like brown butter), cashew, herbal bitterness. Sweet but nicely balanced.
Full, rich mouthfeel. Slick and slightly oily but with with a clean bitter finish. Burnt caramel lingers long.
Fantastic experience. Warming and pleasant, with a variety of sweet and nutty flavors emerging as it warms. Stays just on the happy side of cloying. Spot on, and perfect on a cold night.

Poured on-tap at the brewery in a clear plastic cup, the beer is a dark, auburn-highlighted brown coloring with a foamy, clingy, dense, light tan head. Nose of molasses, honey, and roasted notes. Very subtle. Flavors are honey and caramel forward, with a solid roast and toffee backbone. Chocolate highlights, too. Smooth, heavy body, with a sweet and rich aftertaste. The increased ABV is hidden very well. The finish is smooth and rich.
