The colour is dark brown, almost black (80 EBC); the low head is off-white, it sinks quickly leaving no lacing.
The strong smell is malty with Christmas spices, warming alcohol, caramel, brown malt, roasted nuts. Hints of chocolate and red berries.
The taste is smooth and sweet. Lots of caramel, spices (cinnamon, cloves, bitter oranges, nutmeg) and treacle. Balancing clean bitter hops. Full body. The aftertaste got stronger bitterness, red berries and sticky malt sweetness. Butterscotch and hints or raisins. The short finish is sweet with golden sirup.
The carbonation is medium strong, the large long-lived bubbles are a bit sharp. The liquid is smooth and a bit sticky.
A powerful barley wine that probably will gain of a few years in the cellar.
