Picked up a 4-pk of 16oz cans. Poured oil black as expected for the style. The first taste reminded me of Widmer Bros Pitch Black, subtle hop notes, not what I was expecting with the advertised 5-hop mix, but nicely done. The 7.9% abv is well hidden, making this an extremely drinkable, dare I say, sessionable, black IPA. Well done Backcountry!

Growler. Pours a near-black color with a fairly small tan head. Nose is very roasty and smells more like a roasty stout than a Black IPA. Taste is also very roasty, but has just a hint of bitterness in there. A little light on the hoppiness for me for the style, but still a pleasant drink.

Nice jet black color from the can, solid tan head that leaves some sticky lacing. Aroma off the bat of roasted malts, caramel, rum and fruit cake, ash. Malt-forward as well when it comes to taste, but there is a strong underlying hoppiness here to keep things in check. Distinct earthiness/ashiness lingers as an aftertaste. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but carbonation is full, making it pretty easy to drink. Overall, it's a one-note bitter bomb to me, but not offensive.

Well poured into a pint glass. Black IPA is not an understatement. This beer is closer to black than brown and had a Carmel colored head. Strong roasted smell and taste. It took me about half the pint to really start to enjoy it. It seemed to mellow out after I got used to the taste. The next one was good from the start and tasted very balanced.
