This is a fine-looking black IPA: a giant (pour carefully!) pebbly tannish head looms atop a dark-brown/black beer with plentiful ruby highlights; head retention is superlative and lacing is good, consisting of sticky slabs and caverns. The nose is medium-big: a nice hop aroma, compounded of juicy pineapple, grass, citrus and candy-like spicy florals, backed by a more subtle, narrow, toffee-like dark malt character and some boozy undertones. Up front, the palate is modestly bitter green pine over a dryish toffee/coffee flavor; mid-palate the malt character increases to rival the hops and opens up to show a more chocolatey side, and an assertive bright, tartish lemon bitterness overtakes the pine on the hop end of things. The finish is a modest hit of caramel and bitter pine, and is moderately astringent on the break, followed by a substantial piney rebound bitterness that lingers for quite awhile. The mouthfeel is a bit thinnish for the medium-full body; the texture is medium-creamy and medium-peppery from the well-expressed carbonation. When all is said and done, this beer is appropriately balanced towards hoppy, but the malt character acquits itself well, providing an effective counterpoint. The slightly thinnish mouthfeel actually works well with the lively carbonation to provide a crisper, more drinkable beer; the effective concealment of the alcohol furthers this end. (16 oz can, illegible code date)

Picked up a 4-pk of 16oz cans. Poured oil black as expected for the style. The first taste reminded me of Widmer Bros Pitch Black, subtle hop notes, not what I was expecting with the advertised 5-hop mix, but nicely done. The 7.9% abv is well hidden, making this an extremely drinkable, dare I say, sessionable, black IPA. Well done Backcountry!

Fantastic beer, big citrus hop smell, coffee and roasted malts, chocolate and citrus hops.

Growler. Pours a near-black color with a fairly small tan head. Nose is very roasty and smells more like a roasty stout than a Black IPA. Taste is also very roasty, but has just a hint of bitterness in there. A little light on the hoppiness for me for the style, but still a pleasant drink.

Nice jet black color from the can, solid tan head that leaves some sticky lacing. Aroma off the bat of roasted malts, caramel, rum and fruit cake, ash. Malt-forward as well when it comes to taste, but there is a strong underlying hoppiness here to keep things in check. Distinct earthiness/ashiness lingers as an aftertaste. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but carbonation is full, making it pretty easy to drink. Overall, it's a one-note bitter bomb to me, but not offensive.

Well poured into a pint glass. Black IPA is not an understatement. This beer is closer to black than brown and had a Carmel colored head. Strong roasted smell and taste. It took me about half the pint to really start to enjoy it. It seemed to mellow out after I got used to the taste. The next one was good from the start and tasted very balanced.
