Notes / Commercial Description:
Tear off your suit-and-tie straightjacket; this soulful beer plunges you into the blackness we are normally numb to. Submerge yourself in the riches of an alternate life, outside the corporate fishbowl. Obscured in the depths of this Russian Imperial Stout you encounter a full-roasted body that provides food for dark contemplation. Hiding behind the toasted tones lurk intriguing wisps of complex flavors: aged woods, fresh fruits, earthy nuts. This malty exploration of the soul leaves you wondering: was the darkness in the bottle, or was it in me all along?

Large shared bottle.
Near black but clear body. Decent head.
Thick, smooth and syrupy feel.
Rich flavor with loads of dark roasted grains and light smoke. Less sweet and spicy than Imagination Atrophy with which it was paired, but preferred nonetheless.

Appearance - Pours near black with dark, cola brown edging where light can penetrate. The head is tan in color and peaks at a finger's width, holding on well before dissipating to a thin, consistent layer across the top. Strong lacing with a sheet that spans over half the glass and spotting in between.

Smell - Cocoa, a hint of caramel, dark berry and a bit of char.

Taste - Follows the nose. Mild, slightly earthy cocoa upfront, then some berry notes. Dark chocolate and malt roast bitterness come through mid-taste and strengthen toward the finish. Aftertaste lingers with a bit of smoke, berry and some light astringency.

Mouthfeel - On the heavier side of medium-bodied with low to moderate carbonation. Creamy texture lends itself to a smooth drink before a lightly chalky, drying finish.

Overall - Pretty good RIS, but doesn't do much to distinguish itself from other solid examples of the style. Good flavor profile, but seems to lack ideal depth. I wouldn't turn it down if offered, but I certainly wouldn't trade for it again.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Jet black. Small khaki head. Nice surface wisps.

Smell - Black patent malt. Very roasty. Brandy. Charred oak. Very fruity. Could be from the brandy barrel or the cherry.

Taste - Intense oak. Bitter and spicy oak. Burnt malt. Ashy. A little bit fruity. Some brandy. Dominated by oak and bitter burnt malts, though. I don't get the chestnuts at all. Spicy finish.

Mouthfeel - Very bitter. Not very heavy, but so bitter and ashy that it's tough to drink.

Overall - Intense flavors overwhelm the positive aspects.

The bar I'm at says this has cherries, hazelnut and chestnuts, so I'm not sure which of the dozen+ versions of BAYS this is...

Reminds me of The Abyss with its cherry/bark profile, but BAYS is certainly sweeter. Chocolate/caramel backbone and some woody/tannic notes that help to dry things out. Really solid and tasty, but not quite world class -- a bit too sweet for that distinction.

Nice looking stout, as a slightly forced pour creates a pretty foamy tan head, and leaves a bit of curtain lacing. Nose is not super forward with much of anything other than a slightly smoky dark chocolate. Just not a ton of aroma escaping.

Taste is very well done. Haven't been this "moved" by a non-BA stout for a good while. Bitter dark chocolate and an interesting smokiness to it that captures a darker, more menacing essence than a more run of the mill woody smokiness. Beyond the bitter chocolate and smoky, there's some earthiness likely imparted by the hops, only to be rounded out by an ever so slight sweet malt lick finish.

Probably the most memorable thing about this beer is an uncanny silky smoothness. Not thick, just super slick silky.

A well made imperial stout - big roasted notes along with a surprising amount of hops in here. Bitter baker's chocolate and some nuttiness as an undertone. Dried cherry and fruit layers unravel with this as it warms. Solid.

Ghost 493. Poured from a bomber into a snifter, the beer is jet black, with trails of carbonation bubbling feeding a thin, light tan halo of head. Aromas of licorice, bitter dark chocolate, leather, tobacco, pepper spice, anise, subtle pepper spice, and hints of earth and wood. Flavors are heavily roasted and bitter forward, rich in bitter dark chocolate, robust coffee, heavy tobacco and leather notes, licorice, and dark molasses highlights. Smooth, bold bodied, and slick, with a rich, robust aftertaste heavy in coffee, chocolate, tobacco, and a boozy warmth that builds as you drink. The finish is slick, bold, and slow, with a solid linger of bittersweet notes. Very heavy, with big profiles, but tasty and balanced.
