Corked and caged 12.7oz bottle from j47paco (many thanks!). Bottle 549 of 1800, Release 1, 2014. Served in a Barrel and Barley teku.
Pours jet black with a finger and a quarter deep tan head. A modest halo lingers, leaving only a few sparse specks of lace.
Warm, inviting aromas of bourbon, chocolate, nuts, roasted malt, some vague smoke and a little oak.
The smooth, rounded taste makes it easily apparent that there is a little age on this. Soft, rich bourbon, dark chocolate, heavily roasted malt, nutty, burnt caramel, black coffee, tart cherry, hint of oxidation, some creeping barrel funk and very little discernible alcohol. The flavor starts great and is downright delicious by the time it has warmed up.
Smooth, creamy, medium full body with light carbonation. Dark chocolate, cherry skins and a little roasty oxidation remain on the palate in the finish.
Barrel Aged Black As Your Soul is some outstanding work by Adroit Theory. So smooth and easily drinkable for a style that is typically a sipper. Despite how well it drinks now, given the slight oxidation and hints of barrel funk it is perhaps a good idea to drink in the near future.
