Another delicious beer from de Garde. This one pours a color that I can only describe as that of watered down red wine, with a pinkish head. The aroma is funk and your expected Pinot Noir notes from the grapes. The taste is well balanced with sourness and bitterness being predominant. Very pleasant mouth feel and a long, dry, and bitter finish.

750ml bottle, capped and corked, served in a footed pilsner glass. Bottled 7/21.

Pours clear, brilliant purplish red with a medium sized head that fades to a thin ring. Not a lot of visible carbonation. Smell is tart, oaky, slight funk or mustiness. Vague fruitiness gives a slight jammy hint.

Taste is dry, light red wine, some grape-y-ness. Wood is still there but not really standing alone, more suffusing everything else. Tartness is a little muted. Fruit skin bitterness or maybe tannic bitterness, reminds me of grape skin and wood. Again, some funky/mustiness.

Mouthfeel is smooth, light, maybe a bit more still than I would like. Overall, it's pretty good.

Bottle Date: missed it
Palate Contaminants: other beer

Color is a red that's slightly muddy. Or half-way between a table red wine and a zinfandel. The head is coarse and fizzes out quickly, leaving no lacing.

Smell is funky up front. Rhubarb and berry. Not particularly sweet. Non-sweet strawberry.

Taste is richer than the smell, but still only moderate intensity. The rhubarb is up there. There are vegetable flavors, but not strongly flavored vegetables. More like cucumber and celery. The sweetness does increase in the mouth. Berries are dialed up from the nose. Strawberry is still there, maybe even non-sweet, slightly bitter blueberry.

The carbonation is actually too coarse to be prickly. Vegetables (cucumber especially) are still there in the aftertaste. Mild astringency. Heavy weight for the aftertaste, even though the weight of the liquid is medium. The aftertaste is really nice, even if the texture is substandard.

From a 25 oz bottle, into a tulip. Beautiful dark rose color. Lively fruity grape notes, some tannins, some woodiness, and more fizzy than expected, on the tongue. Minimal funk and not super layered or complex (for these guys), but still really good. A little sticky, early on, but it dries out at the end.

Lively effervescence out of the bottle, producing a finger of fizzy light purple head. Red wine-like appearance. Strong grape presence throughout that melds nicely with the oaky tannins of the extended barrel aging. Crisp, champagne-like mouthfeel. My favorite to date from de Garde

The Archer from de Garde Brewing. Received on 9/4/21 from @Rub_This_BBQ in NBS BIF #13. 25.4 oz corked and capped brown bottle stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 27/6/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Label stamped “BOTTLED 9/20”. Served at 44.0 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 53.2 degrees.
Appearance – 4.5.
First pour – Tea rose, clear
Body – Imperial red, opaque. When rear-lite, brilliant imperial red and clear, with lots of carbonation.
Head – Average (Maximum 3.3 cm, aggressive center pour), pink, medium to low density initially but quickly disappearing, average retention, diminishing to leave a one mm crown fed by effervescence and no cap. Subsequent pours produce a dense but fizzy and transitory 1.2 cm head.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4 – Some grape must and general funk. No malt, no hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.5 – Begins bitter from the oak barrel tannic acid with an over-riding grape flavor and some lactic acid. Minimal funk. No malt, no hops, no yeast. No ethanol (8 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. Mild gastric warming does occur. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Ends dry with excessive tannic acid.
Palate – 4 – Thin, watery, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Very good wild ale which could use a bit less tannic acid. The colorations of the head and body are outstanding and best appreciated under bright light.

Another beer consumed at the Firestone Walker Pre Party 2017.

Pours that color in between red and pink. Rose somewhat. Made a sizeable 1"+ lighter shade of pink head. Good retention. Nose was Tillamook pasture, grapes, lemon, oak, yogurt.

Taste was cool, had this small impression that it was raspberry and grape, but I think perhaps maybe that Pinot Noir has kind of a drying effect more than other grapes similar to how raspberry does it more than other berries. Dry oak tannin like character helps too I bet. Normal de garde sourness. Lemon and straw for days. Hint of cranberry. Definitely one that comes pretty close to being a wine/beer hybrid mashup if not actually being one.

This one is all Oregon. Oregon flora for sure. Hits its stride as having the Goldilocks amount of fruit, wood, sourness, carbonation. 24 months in barrels can often create too much of a woody ride, but this really did well with extended barrel aging, refermenting and blending.

Mostly clear glowing red with a fuzzy bright white head.

Super funky with an airy fizz, this one features woody, seedy strawberry and candied lemon peel with toasted oak and all kinds of farmhouse funk, hay and straw, finishing paper dry. All that said, it's a little watery and light in feel and flavor, relative to other de Garde funk bombs.

Crazy delicious. Cranberry hue with light pink head that recedes nicely. Very pungent funk and wine notes. Taste follows very well. Not overly tart great mix of notes. Finishes dry and crisp.
