Beer No.450. And to think I almost traded this away...

A - A captivating pinky-orange hue. Another reviewer mentioned papaya and I'd second that. I'm a huge fan of unfiltered beer, and this beer is swimming with sediment.

S - Interestingly I'm getting peaches rather than strawberry, with a little blue cheese funk and lactic acidity. Smells like stewed peaches slathered in pungent crème fraîche, dowsed in lemon juice and topped with crumbled blue cheese. In a good way.

T - Pretty much following the nose with a little must from the oak barrels. The more I drink this, the more I want to keep drinking; just to get to the bottom of what it has to offer.

M - Fairly low carbonation which I like as it makes for a very smooth experience.

O - Several other reviewers have noted some fairly awful plastic, band-aid or other generally unpleasant flavours. Part of me wonders if there was significant bottle variation or perhaps it just needed a few months for the flavours to come together. Either way the bottle that I poured was next-level stuff. I'm not normally a fan of strawberry either, so that's saying something. Every now and again you have a beer which makes you feel a little sad you'll never get to drink it again. This was one such beer. Everyone knows De Garde is brewing great beer, but having had Brun Marron yesterday, and this today, it's clear that even De Garde's least highly rated beers are still on another level from most breweries. A 4 from De Garde is not the same as a 4 from most breweries, and based on the contents of the bottle I just poured, neither is a 4.2.

Another bandaid bomb from de Garde, this one at least had a little fruit coming through. Let it sit for a bit but it was still sulfur and phenolics.

Bottle decanted into a De Garde hourglass tumbler. Cloudy papaya color, with a small white head that dissipated to a tiny ringlet. In the aroma, green strawberries with a hint of lacto, toasted wheat, plastic-like phenols. Hmm. The taste was similar, green/unripe strawberries, with a light lemony lacto tartness, giving way to some major plastic phenols, Band-Aids, crackery malts, toasted wheat, and some dry grassy funk. Burp was pure Band-Aids. I'm not sure if this is infected or not, but there's definitely something off here, which is kind of a disappointment after the Apricot Bu, which was incredible. Despite the phenols, the mouthfeel was nice, crisp and dry, body was medium, carbonation lower than average. This was okay, drinkable, but overall, there was just something off here, and it was not very enjoyable.

In my opinion, if you have this beer, drink it now, because it could potentially go downhill fast.

Strawberries and bandaids. Not a good combo. Worst De Garde I have had. It is a shame because the strawberry flavor and aroma is pretty good. Just bandaids and smoke on top which is off putting to say the least.

Many thanks to Bobby for sharing this.

Pours a vibrant pink with a nice white head. Looks great.

Smell is interesting. Almost fake strawberry aromas with some funk and a bit of plastic.

Taste is a touch better than the nose. Real strawberry flavors are present, there's a touch of tartness, but then weird plastic flavors come in ruin the finish.

Mouthfeel is decent.

Overall, I was psyched to finally try something from De Garde, and this was a big let down.
