Taste - about the same as the smell
Feel - medium body and carb
Overall - ok but not a fan of the grape mustiness

i have never been a fan of muscat wines, but i have come to love these grapes in a beer context, and who better to express them in a killer wild ale than these guys?! we picked this up at the brewery when we were through here this summer, felt right to bust it out for thanksgiving. it pours an at first sparkling clear and later in the bottle a slightly sedimented pale golden hue, nice and airy white headed, slow fade on it, with swift moving carbonation and a visual lightness about it for its 8% abv. the wine grapes are obvious in the aroma behind the usual de garde funk, this is a little more tart and a little less lambic-esque than some of theirs have been, but some brett is evident with the citric tang. the fruit isnt as sweet to me in the nose as it is when its wine, and i like the high mineral profile it seems to bring, some soft peach tones too, nice with this fermentation profile, it all makes my mouth water to taste it. quite a lot of fruit in the flavor, notes of green apple, green banana, and ripe peach, obviously quite vinous, some acidity here too, new and clean oak profile, farmy rustic funk at the end, well balanced with the grain, which seems real light for as strong as this is, must be a lot of fermentable sugar contributed by the fruit here. not too acidic to drink the whole bottle of, highly effervescent in feel with a very light body, and really nicely done overall, as is to be expected from de garde. this doesnt immediately rank among my favorites of their beers, but its hard to argue the quality. always a pleasure to drink their stuff, this felt regal for the holidays, very champagne-esque, yum!

Thanks Sam! Bottled Jan 2019.

A clear yellow with a dense white head with good retention and minimal lacing, this looks solid. The nose is really dominated by the vinous notes, with a floral and lemony fruit, bright and refreshing paired with an herbal and spicy skin and seed tannin note. Almost a little mace and toasted cumin like. The base pale sour also has a mild clove note that complements the spice the Muscat grapes give. A touch dusty, this is bright and refreshing.

The palate opens sour and funky with the funk pairing seamlessly with the grapes. Mushroom, wet forest floor, a little wet horseblanket, wet straw, pairing well with a brooding cumin, clove and mace note. Acidity is shockingly reserved, with a nice lemon and mildly lactic note. Preserved lemon, pepper, a light roasted jalapeno note. Drying, tart on the finish with bright lemon, with tannins well integrated. Light in body, crisply carbonated, this is excellent.

20 April 2020 - Beer #73

Corona Day #39

Price: $23.00 at Other Half Brewing

Appearance: 4 - looks like my wife poured me a glass of white wine. Completely transparent with lots of bubbles and nearly no head.

Nose: 4 - lots of grape, but also some mildly unpleasant wet blanket, cat piss funk.

Taste: 4 - if I didn't know better I'd say it was a glass of champagne. It really doesn't taste like beer at all. It's very bubbly white wine. I mean this IS white wine.

Mouth: 5 - tons of action here. Extremely bubbly and acidic. Tingly to the max.

Overall: 4 - I prefer beer to wine, but this is a nice change of pace.

Stay safe out there, team.

Cheers!

Shimmering engagement ring gold with a fuzzy off-white foam settling to an uneven ring.

Up front is stinky, pungent funk, yet softly so, developing towards a dusty walnut and oak character before the fruit comes in. The grape is actually mimicking raspberry-lemon Gushers, as the softly frothy light body comes to a crisply semi-dry finish bringing out a hint of floral Tahitian vanilla and pink Starburst. There's even notes of guava at times.

A grape PNW wild ale bringing so many candy notes combined with that classic dG funk? Quite unique!

A- Golden yellow body and slightly hazy. A foamy one finger head lacking much retention. Tiny ring around the edges leaves rare spots of lace.

S- Funky and ripe sour bugs. A bit cheesy. Sour muscat grapes and big grape skin character. Not as funky as other de Garde beers so far.

T- Less funk and lambic character here, not cheesy just a bit of the funky, hay and barnyard to it. Big juicy grapes. Tons of great grape skin, phenolic bitter goodness. Not much seed or stem character. Lemon notes and plenty of lactic acid. Very oaky and vinous.

MF- Light bodied with a slightly foamy and puffy texture. Medium level of carbonation and very sour.

Grapes and vinous oak quality with less of the funk and lambic character found in some of their other sours. Very sour with great usage of these grapes.
