I'll be perfectly honest. I'm not the biggest fan of de Garde's take on the Berliner Weisse/Gosé style of kettle sour beers. Whereas many seem to highly regard their ability to bring out impossible amounts of fruit and acid in every/any iteration of their signature "Bu" series, the high acid, low ABV combination doesn't sit well with neither my stomach nor my sour-impaired palate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also like my Berliner Weisses to have more dimension other than just being puckery and sour; a hint of grain and some yoghurt is something that I've strongly come to associate with the style which I don't often see in de Garde's offerings.

My reservations about the Tilamookites' interpretation of resurrected German beer styles aside, Imperial Purple Raz Bu is a modern craft beer masterpiece--a pinnacle display of how much a beverage brewed with water, malts, (hops), and yeast as its base can diversify itself from its most basic, widely consumed commercial example.

Whereas fruited / barrel-aged beers of the sour inclination tend to lean heavily toward one aspect of its selling point, IPRB is a superbly well-rounded expression of all its individual constituents; a rare case with "sours" where the whole is actually equal to or greater than the sum of its parts.

Straight from the get go, large bursts of prickly seedy wild dark berries, jammy red berry flesh and rich musty oak infiltrate the nose wave after wave. There's some mild tannic qualities which surface toward the back end after some time, but they complement the oak, giving it more of a wet wood kind of character like with aged wine rather than detract from the big picture.

The sensation on the palate is a masterfully orchestrated melange of bright and dark berries, rich aged oak, topped off with a tartness which is a pleasant departure from the usual over-the-top tartness that I've come to expect from de Garde.

The jammy bright raspberry leaves a huge initial impression, followed by a spritzy wave of tart lactic acid which washes away any semblance of sweetness before it happens, which is then curbed by the dry oaky finish before the brew has any time to impart lasting notes of sourness.

Medium-light bodied, more resemblant of wine than a Berliner Weisse. Crisp and refreshing mouthfeel with a gentle pleasant amount of carbonation. Quite possibly the perfect companion for long nights of binge-watching 90s sitcoms on Netflix.

Huge purple color. Pink head. A bit of a gusher.

Massive fruit flavors. Lots of berries all around... black and red. Tart and sour. Very jammy.

Medium bodied.

Great beer. Very enjoyable.

Appearance: Deep purple, with a lavender head that leaves a few strands

Smell: Black raspberry with some tangy wheat tones

Taste: Black raspberry tartness with growing sour tones through the middle; a hint of underlying sweetness from the fruit

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Another intensely fruited sour from de Garde

Pours a slightly hazy light purplish red color with light fizzy pink head. Funk, raspberries, oak, and light tartness on the nose; follows onto the palate. Light bodied. Finishes with plenty of tart fruit notes from the raspberries. Very nice.

Batch 2 drank in a chalice on 6/21/2016

Look - deep dark red, almost like a dark red wine. The head was super pink and thick big disappeared very quickly. Looks heavy too

Smell - raspberry, oak, a little wheat yeast from the Berliner Weiss. The tartness comes through on the scent, but this is a true fruity, raspberry beer. Very potent

Taste - raspberry jam! really crisp and refreshing, but also pretty deep and bold, especially for a 5.5%er. The oak barrel is certainly present as well.

Feel - very drinkable, silky and smooth

Overall - my first de garde! amazing too. Will seek more out and maybe even this one again. Very amazed by this.

One of the better beers I've had. Smell is like raspberry jam with some very slight wood. Mouthfeel is relatively thick. Taste is raspberry jam. Slightly dry, mildly and pleasantly sweet cut by the lactic; very subtle wood. One of my all-time favorite beers.

Nice fruit, but not that much oak or funk. Balance is good but this beer falls a little short of other de Garde's I've had. Also what the hell is a purple raspberry?

Deep purple-ish color, with no head. Aroma is smuckers jam. Taste is raspberries, lactic, and a bit of blackberry. The feel is thicker than usual for a Berliner. Very intense.

The beer is a deep purple-magenta color, dark and vibrant. Medium purple head. The aroma is tart and juicy with tons of berries. Light floral note with gentle lacto. Fairly tart with lots of fruit character. Big berries. Definitely a raspberry bomb but a good dose of blackberry-ish tartness on top. Quite dry. Fair bit of oak. Light feel, lots of pucker. Excellent fruit character.

Gusher. Pour is extremely dark purple, opaque, dark pinkish purple head. Nose gives high acidity, fleshy raspberry, seedy blackberry. Flavor is quite rich, blackberry jam is strong, moderate to high acidity, very fleshy fruit. Body is very full, high carb, acidity all over the mouth.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Blood red. Deep, deep purple. Deep red head. Maybe the darkest red head I've seen on a beer.

Smell - Strong berry aroma. Almost like red wine. Dark raspberry. Slightly acidic.

Taste - Deep raspberry juiciness up front. Intense. De Garde sourness right behind it. Sour raspberry in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Strong sourness. Medium carbonation.

Overall - One of the first De Garde beers that has really impressed me.

On tap at de Garde yesterday.

Brilliant purple colored head on a purple body, this beer is the embodiment of what a raspberry beer should be. Brilliant fruit expression, bright, jammy, minimal seed character( shockingly little, really), pulpy and with a nice blend of fruit sourness and the lactic acid from the base beer. Refreshing, juicy, with nice structure, this beer is just way too easy to drink. Almost as good as the Imperial Black Raz Bu
