Pour is black with a small bubbly tan head. Nose is bile acid and cherry cola with hints of dry leathery brett. Flavor is a little better, not much, butyric acid, notes of dark malt, cherry cola, quite sour, moderate acidity in finish, body is fairly heavy, super high carb, oily finish.

i wanted a lot more from this one, with the rarity of their beer, at least here in colorado, and the small format, which i had never seen before this one, i expected something quite spectacular, but it seems like age may have gotten the best of this one, if it was ever even that good. its a mess right now, overly acidic, like too developed there, so that its more of a red wine vinegar complexion than anything else, very little nuance to the fermentation profile at all, which is usually what makes these de garde beers so compelling. dark brown from the bottle with an airy tan head on it that quickly dissipates, leaving a slick and still glass, not as heavy and dense as i thought it might be for its alcohol strength, which is pretty exposed both in aroma and flavor (our bottle says 11.5%, not the 11.7% listed here, they must have made this a few times, not sure how old it is). its also interesting that its aged in bourbon barrels, both the nose and the taste suggest red wine to me, any richness, vanilla, or barrel char from the bourbon is lost to the astringent acidity in here. there is a woodiness, but it doesnt serve to mellow the sourness or the booziness, so this one is hard to drink. some neat elements to this like the chocolate notes from the grain and a dried cherry thing right in the middle, even rum and raisin notes to it, but this ends up being a major disappointment, perhaps better when it was brand new, but now its a casualty of the cellar. its hard when you expect greatness to even like anything less, but the reputation these guys have created for themselves with such great beers most of the time has set that standard. bummer about this one.
