Pours black with a large head.
Nose shows coffee, roasted barley, some bready malt.
More coffee as a flavour along with some soft roast. A little light on.

330ml bottle.
L: Very dark brown, almost black. Lots of visible carbonation. A slightly aggressive pour produces a massive, 3-finger, mocha coloured, foaming head and spotty lacing.
S: Strong & persistent coffee and bitter chocolate aroma.
T: Follows the nose. Semi-sweet and a nicely bitter aftertaste.
F: Light body with noticeable carbonation. Smooth and dry.
O: Lots of flavour & complexity and pretty good mouthfeel for a measly 3.8% alcohol. A cracking session stout.

L: Jet black color, 2 finger brown head, nice lacing, no visible carbonation.

S: Sweet, chocolate, hints of coffee.

T: Totally different than the aroma. Kind of watery, though foamy. Bit of coffee flavors and chocolate but very faint.

F: Hugely carbonated, like sparkling water.

O: Had much higher expectations but was kind of disappointed.

Bottle pour into snifter.

A very pleasant easygoing stout. Nice and light on the booze front so having a couple on a midweek evening doesn't seem too extravagant. This is very close to the excellent Left Hand Milk Stout being let down only by a touch too much carbonation for me. Not half bad and would buy again

Pours black into glass from a bottle. Dark tan head is three - four fingers high with sparse, sudsy, silky foam which clings to the sides.

Aroma I can get from about two feet away; strong bitter coffee with an aromatic almost spicyness to it, like a milder version of the Xocoveza.

The flavour follows on; big coffee number which doesn't go overboard, nor falls victim to sweetness or over-bitterness; they have it just in the middle. There's some cocoa in there, roasted grain, a little char, and plenty of oats, but there's also a bit of mineral water on the back end which is a bit too noticeable to me - maybe the low ABV is making this stout feel a little thin and underwhelming but something doesn't sit right with me.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a little crisp for a stout with more carbonation than I'm used to. Starts off light on the tongue before turning velvety thick on the swallow. It's an interesting combination.

For 3.8% this is pretty good. Would've liked more body, maybe some further development in the flavours to ward off the slight mineral note in the end, but this is a fine session stout.

APPEARANCE: No light is escaping from this beer. It’s black-hole-black. A few, slow-moving, tiny bubbles can be seen streaming up the outside of the glass into a quickly dying, off-white head. Not much lacing at all.

SMELL: Dark Chocolate is the first thing to hit the nose, but the coffee comes through right behind it.

TASTE: This is a true Coffee Stout, and basically tastes like coffee with sugar and cream. There also seems to be a hint of an herbal, and maybe even a non-spicy, chili flavor at the very tail end.

MOUTHFEEL: Velvety and smooth. Medium to big bodied, despite the lower ABV.

OVERALL: There is a lot going on with this beer for 3.8%. The coffee is the star of the show, but a pleasant, bitter, dark chocolate helps it out quite a bit. This seems like the perfect, cold, winter night, session beer.

500ml bottle into an oversized tulip. Paid £3.20 for a single bottle.
Batch 0271 (3.8% ABV)

Pours an opaque, shiny, dark black body. Some ruby tints become visible near the edge of the glass when held to the light. A huge, three-finger in height, light tan coloured foamy head reduces slowly to a dense cap, leaving behind thin, sticky, soapy lace.

Dark roasted malts and ground coffee beans in roughly equal parts comprise the majority of the nose. Hints of milky sweetness are faintly perceptible underneath, along with some earthy, herbal, green hop bitterness. Taste roughly follows suit. Upfront, dry, dark roasted malts and heavily roasted coffee are sweetened slightly by subtle hints of milk chocolate and lactose sugars. Mid-palate, dark roast profiles lighten briefly to further reveal the beers full sweetness before building once again towards the finish. Green, earthy herbal hops provide moderate bitterness alongside increasing char, ash and smoke profiles. In the mouth, a light to medium body and soft carbonation give a slightly thin, but smooth and crisp feel. Burnt coffee beans, dark roasted malts, cocoa powder and ash linger long enough to combine with returning lactose, finishing bittersweet and dry the on palate.

Overall this is a good beer, and a very good session beer. At only 3.8% ABV its flavours are well balanced and impressively full of complex roast, coffee and lactose sweetness. The body is a little thin, but forgivable at such low gravity. Recommended.

500ml, bottle-conditioned. Pours almost black with thick, lasting tan head. Aroma is ash, tobacco. Taste is sweet, some milkyness, ash and tobacco. Mouthfeel: medium bodied, lasting ash taste. Overall: An interesting beer. Lots of flavour for its low gravity. I sampled mine 3 months into its 12 months bbe date.

Too lively at first, but smooths out into lactose cream nicely. Lots of coffee, not all of it good. Perle doesn’t show up enough to put it in the name Easy drinking in body and ABV, but too sharp to actually session. 3.75
