The red fruit sits behind classic Abbey yeast esters. More present in the taste, but maintains a supporting role to predominantly sweet aromas and flavors.

Ordered this as part of a flight during a recent trip to Penrose. This beer features a clear, deep mahogany colored liquid with a thin white head that dissipates very quickly. There is low carbonation visible in the form of small bubbles rising slowly toward the surface. 4/5 The aroma is very enticing and features notes of raspberries, dark stone fruit, and sorghum. These sweeter notes are backed up by an earthy, mossy yeast note that keeps the aroma from becoming too sweet. 3.75/5 The flavor follows the nose dead on with raspberry and sorghum leading off the flavor profile before dipping into a bit of dark rye bread. Dates and raisins come out next, bringing even more sweetness. At this point the earthiness and peat moss notes come out prior to an herbal hop bitterness showing up. This bitterness is fairly light and does not linger. 4/5 This is a medium bodied beer that has absolutely no drying, rather staying fairly wet throughout. Light carbonation tickle up front disappears fairly quickly from the palate. 4/5 Very good fruity dubbel that is not overly sweet, but is sweet enough to definitely be a fruited beer. The yeast helps keep the sweetness at bay and keeps the beer from becoming cloying. 4/5

Draft: Pours reddish brown with a nice thick khaki head. Head dissipates, but leaves a nice thin film along the beer.

Smell has aromas of dark fruits, brown sugar and caramel and belgian yeast all tinged by a sweet raspberry fruit smell. Sweet, but not syrupy on the nose. Rather tart actually.

Taste is initially and momentarily a pretty classic dubbed - you get the robust bready malts, caramel, dark fruits and brown sugar coming through on the front of the tongue. Then suddenly you notice this slightly sweet tart raspberry flavor coming through. Again, the raspberry - here the flavor - is not at all syrupy. Its also more on the subtle side, but I think that helps as if it were to be more pronounced it might get too tart for a dubbel. As it is it more compliments the natural flavors of the dubbed while not overpowering it.

Feel was mildly carbonated. Nice smooth mellow flavor, drinkable.

Ok, as Dubbel's go this is a pretty non-traditional take on the style - adding tart raspberries. However, as a beer, it works and actually is quite tasty. If i come across this again, I'd certainly have another.

On tap at Gillerson's Grubbery - Aurora, IL
A - ruddy brown colored body with a thin, foamy beige head
S - Belgian yeast, caramel, bread crust, subtle raspberry
T - raspberry is subtle again but comes out a bit more as it warms and does complement the Belgian yeast esters nicely. Toffee, caramel, bread crust, and earthy hops round out the flavors
M - medium body, smooth with modest carbonation, balanced finish
O - I was actually hoping for a more pronounced raspberry flavor in this beer. Still very well put together, but I thought the raspberry was barely noticeable. I'm always glad try a new Penrose beer though.
