Notes: Troublesome's meaner cousin will flail your tongue as hard as he can, but being such a little guy, you'll probably just pucker a bit. Spawned through an overnight kettle souring with our house lactobacillus culture, the wort emerges furious at what we did to it. Then, just because, we pitch a saison yeast and allow it to free rise to it's further distain. It comes out angrier than... uh, angrier than... well, something really angry. But at 3.8% ABV there's no reason for you to be too afraid.

Bottled summer 2014; drank 9/17/14 @ the Yarchives.

Semi-opaque pale yellow hue.

HUGE white head (careful pouring!); minimal lace.

Wheat & mild lemon nose.

Thin mouthfeel.

Honey, graham cracker & mild lemon flavors up front; a cider-y dry finish. Sour lemon notes emerge more as this warms.

Quaffable but with nice flavor.

Not a style I know much about or ever drink, but I really enjoyed this. Very crisp and refreshing. A hint of sour and funk with a bubbly mouthfeel.

Step away from your DIPAs and BA stouts and give this one a try. Off Color does subtle so very well.

12oz bottle that is a full year old

Very light on... almost everything. Thin mouthfeel with a lot of carbonation and a zip of lemon at the end. Lots of wheat and yeast taste in there for 4%. Citrus, grain, and spring water

Better with age, I vote we replace La Croix with this stuff

12oz bottle, enjoy by 24 Jul 18. Cloudy and pale straw colored ale with a bubbly white head that fades to a foam. Aroma is lemongrass, bread yeast, and wheat. Flavors are tart and sour with notes of lemon, wheat, yeast, and sour white grape. Light body, lively carbonation, finishing tart and sour. This was interesting for me. A lot going on and I can't say it truly worked for me.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a JK Snörkel glass. BBD 1 Oct 17.

Appearance: Slightly hazy yellow/gold colored body with a fizzy bubble head.

Aroma: All tart and sour, you know what you're getting into!

Taste/Mouthfeel: Bright tartness on the tongue followed by, and ending with, a dry and clean finish.

Overall: Tart, sour and tasty! This one is really done well and you can put down plenty of these at ease.

It pours bright yellow, hazy and with a small head. Lots of tart notes on the nose. Yogurt-like and floral aromas. The taste is well balanced between the tart and sweet. Medium body.

This was poured into a stange. The appearance was a light yellow transparent color with a fast rising carbonation seen rising to fill a quickly dissipating foamy to bubbly head. There wasn’t any lacing. The smell had the sour wheat up front, slightly sticky, crisp lemon runs into blend nicely. Tart to sweet grassiness runs underneath. The taste was mainly sour with a nice level of tart and balanced by a dry crisp dry lemon and somewhat sweet in the aftertaste leading into a quick dry sweet sticky finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a nice sessionable aspect to it. Carbonation hits my tongue nicely. Tartness hits dryly on my tongue as expected. Overall, I say this was a nice Berliner Weisse. Everything fits, I’d have this again.

Looks like champagne. Smells like Windex. Taste like sour nothing. I'm talking about nasty sour water. Undrinkable. Mouth is like over carbonated water. Overall, this is a garbage beer. Skip it. Taste like they made a proper sour then dumped it out, left the yeast sludge in and then refilled the fermenter with water. Started to clean it then someone said "I bet we could sell this to the hipsters". 3ish IBUs... WTF! This is a novelty at best.

12oz. bottle into a Surly teku. Shared by schen9303.

Nose is yeasty with hints of lemon zest, foam and citrus. Lightly tart with a foamy, lactic sweetness. Beer opens lightly lactic with a very mellow diacetyl. Hints again, of lemon, citrus and a sweet, delicate milkiness. Really drinkable. Tart but not overly so with a great, smooth sweet balance. Body is light with ample carbonation. Prickly and lively in the mouth and goes down dry. Accented finish.

A very well made beer. Too often, this style is just straight sour. But this has great balance with overtones of lactic and wheat sweetness. Worth trying.

Bottle dated 7/2016:
Pours a lightly hazy and light straw to golden color. Head is pretty big initially, a vibrant white, medium bubbled head. Not much lacing, though in the long run.

Nose is an interesting sweet-tart, with a white bread sweetness countering against an indistinct sour note. Warmth helps the bread aspect of the nose - with the wheat itself becoming a part of the nose.

Taste is very similar to the nose, with a fairly light carbonation. The taste is clean, and hits up front with the tart note. The sweet tart of the nose shows up in the mix of flavor leading into the end taste, where the bread and wheat once again gain traction on the palate.

A nice beer, similar to many I have had in the style. The non-sour flavors are powerful enough to add a nice little complexity to this beer and keep it from being too much of a boring tart beer.

Pours hazy golden straw yellow with a quickly dissipating frothy white foam head. Smells like sour tart fruits, apricot, peach, pineapple, lemony orange grapefruity lime citrus, green apple, peppery spice, mild crackery malts, with floral earthy herbal grass. Tastes like sour fruits, some musty apricot, peach, pineapple, lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, green apple, with crackery malts, peppery spice, and mild floral earthy herbal grass. Feels medium bodied, creamy with moderate carbonation. Overall a really nice sour weissbier.

almost translucent the color is so pale, with a nice white head of thin foam. The smell is amazing, lots of stuff going on... it's musty, grassy, light tartness and a hint of wheat. Love the smell. The taste is what you would expect after the nose. Starts slightly sour lemon flavor with some tartness and leaves you with a pleasant aftertaste of grain and yeast. The feel is very light in body (3.8% abv) but not quite as carbonated as I would like. Still goes down easy. I'm disappointed in myself for taking so long to try this beer. I love it!

Pours a straw to pale gold color with a lively white head and plenty carbonation visible. The nose pops with citrus and yeast notes, inviting you in for what turns out to be a complex and satisfying beer.

Sweet and sour candy feel to it in some sips, there is also a salty element that comes in as you work through it. Not quite puckering enough to give you instant heartburn but refreshingly tart with a lot of zip and zing. Funky tones play well with the faint pepper and cream cracker-esque yeastiness.

Off Color does a lot of styles well but this might be one of their best.

L: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a pale yellow color and a cloudy texture. There was an inch of foamy head that lasted a fair amount of time. Not much lacing.

S: A surprisingly big aroma of wheat, citrus, grain, and a sourness.

T: Tasted of a lot of citrus (lemon, more than anything else), a bit of wheat, a salty quality, other light fruits, spices (pepper, especially), and the grainy quality. Not as sour as the aroma belied, instead the flavor is super-sweet. Has a mildly funky quality that's unusual for the style, but it's not an issue. very sweet and fruity.

F: A well-carbonated beer with a lively finish. Light-bodied.

O: A well made and easy to drink beer. A good session brew for the summer.

Lemon aroma, some other citrus, and grass.
Sour lemon taste, some lime, some funk.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours very hazy/cloudy golden yellow color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white heat with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big sour lemon, lime, apricot, peach, green apple, white wine, hay, straw, musty funk, leather, pepper, wheat, cracker, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast and light-moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big sour lemon, lime, apricot, peach, green apple, white wine, hay, straw, musty funk, leather, pepper, wheat, cracker, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Moderate fruity/acidic tartness and light yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, lime, apricot, peach, green apple, white wine, hay, straw, musty funk, leather, pepper, wheat, cracker, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/spiciness balance and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness from acidity and carbonation as well. Medium-high carbonation and light body; with a very smooth, crisp, moderately acidic, and slightly creamy/grainy mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 3.8%. Overall this is an excellent Berliner weisse style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast and light-moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

S - The aroma is mildly sour.
T - Initially salty, then some lemony tartness
M - Crisp and refreshing with above average carbonation.
O - Low ABV is a plus as you can drink a few of these with no worries. Another really good beer from my new favorite local brewer.

Pours a semi-cloudy light yellow color. Beer clears up as it sits. Thin white head dissipates almost immediately. Absolutely no residual head is left.

Aroma is somewhat tart, lemon, hints of wheat, and a touch of a yogurt-like aroma.

Taste is lightly tart - in no way overpowering. Nice strong wheated malt backbone. Lemon and yogurt like notes come through as well. This is a very well executed beer that is at least recognizable as a Berliner Weisse.

Feel is light to medium bodied. Mildly tart producing a light puckering sensation. Mild to moderate carbonation.

Overall this is a very well executed American brewed Berliner - really an exceptional example of the style.

A review upon yet another tasting and the rating remains the same.
I like how Off Color works on the tougher styles and brings an interesting interpretation.
Fierce is a Berliner Weiss and sour as heck. (I Had this again as preparation for my first return to Berlin after a 2001 trip in which I first experienced the style.)
Fierce follows the style well enough and has enough interpretation to keep me repeating this acquired taste.
But Off Color: can you experiment with the the traditional raspberry and woodruff syrup that Berliners like so much on a hot day ? Thanks.

No label information. Brewed in the style of a Berliner Style Weisse Ale, available in 12 oz. bottled 4 packs and on seasonal draft.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a tulip glass.

(Appearance) Pours a smooth, foamy head of a pastel white color over a pale champagne straw yellow body with ample carbonation and very high clarity. Retention is above average and there is no lacing. 3.75

(Smell) Slightly above average sourness, lactic and acidic with pithy, sharp lemon notes, delicate effervescent peppery notes, and a gentle malt bed of cracker and malted wheat. Potency is moderate. 3.75

(Taste) Malted wheat body with soft, tangy fruitiness of peach, apricot and white grape juices, mild lemony acidity, delicate dry, but refreshing finish. Just enough sweetness from the malt body to nicely balance out the tart of the lactobacillus. All-around solid ale, true to style. 4

(Mouthfeel) Texture is lightly fluffy, clean, moderately acidic, medium dry. Carbonation is modest, generating a medium frothiness and a gently crisp finish. Body is shy of medium for the style, light+ overall. Balance is nearly even acidic and tart to sweet. Alcohol presence is very low and there are no off characters. 4

(Overall) Off Color Brewing tends to favor the more unusual styles, and while Berliner Weissbier has had a resurgence in recent years in the American market, this is a solid and true-to-style example of a quality American-brewed Berliner and among the better-brewed examples. Light, tangy and acidic yet nicely balanced and light enough to be very sessionable. Frankly, its biggest disappointment is that it manages to be packaged in the unfairly small 4-pack. 3.75

Pale straw to clear yellow with rapid, fine columns of carbonation. A one-inch, fluffy white head dissipates within a few minutes, leaving a ring of lace on a Brigand chalice.

Pronounced funkiness of wet socks tweaks the olfactory, while lemon lingers in the background with wheat and wet straw.

Lemon flavors dominate, including citrus tartness. Musty white wine gives way to sweetness. The finish is long and dry, while warmth brings out white bread.

A medium body with ample carbonation and a smooth, soft texture. Alcohol is surprisingly present.

This is an elegant and easy sipping beer. One can relax while sharing casual conversation, or use it as a substitute for Champagne.
