Style: Berliner Weisse

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 3.80%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Troublesome's meaner cousin will flail your tongue as hard as he can, but being such a little guy, you'll probably just pucker a bit. Spawned through an overnight kettle souring with our house lactobacillus culture, the wort emerges furious at what we did to it. Then, just because, we pitch a saison yeast and allow it to free rise to it's further distain. It comes out angrier than... uh, angrier than... well, something really angry. But at 3.8% ABV there's no reason for you to be too afraid.

Pours a soapy, soft, white head that has nice persistence. A bright, tart, slightly citric aroma. Hazy, straw yellow color. Starts with a really nice, explosive tartness that tastes slightly like white wine. HUGE wave of maltiness bursts through and mingles with the subsiding tartness.

Good god, this is amazing. An EXCELLENT example of a Berliner; fiercely tart, yet robustly malty. Easily in my top 3 examples of the style.

Poured from the bottle into a wheat ale glass.

Wow what a winner out of the bottle. Controlled decant just brings a supper controlled big, giant, FROTHY and foamy bright bleach white head. Grabs a nice fist full and clear with a foamy top and settles slowly, hanging around big and large. Body color is straw yellow, extremely pale but with a brilliant light green hue to it and shimmering crystal clear. Big thin rising carbonation, uniform, and tilting and cascading on every angle to keep up appearances. A clear berliner, and just an awesome looker.

Excellent aroma follows. Deep hints of bread and very light spritzy lemon. Nice hints of lacto sour qualities. An almost smoked and husky ripping grain quality on such a brew, it seems like a big beer is coming. Controlled tartness with lemon and zest following nicely. Real nice green herb quality too that for me is shocking to notice (corriander?), which I rarely pick up. Delicious bouquet.

Palate just hits all the right notes. A huge flavor driven mid palate of wheaty chew and lemon candy drop bursting. Mild tartness and big full body for such a low abv. Thick and cooked white bread, with toasty finish and light driven sour lemon qualities. Slight mild sugars up front but the palate just sings of tart lemon and light cake and bread. Creamy palate and controlled with a big controlled malt backbone that has an almost honey like coating everywhere.

What an excellent Berliner this is, wonderful stuff.

Ever so slightly hazy straw colour with a curvaceous, pillowy white head with a retention second-to-none.

Perfect, very strong funk and sour aromas, with a slight citrus character and soft but notable biscuit/wheat backbone. Very complex yet subtle esters that take a backseat to the extremely unique funkiness.

Tart upfront with citrusy sour-yet-tame notes of lemon/tangerine balanced by a perfect biscuit/saltine bready-ness.

Light mouthfeel with an exceptionally smooth and savory midpoint and an amazingly balanced drying finish.

My second 12oz. of this particular beer and one of my overall favorites. So refreshing.

One of my all-time favorite beers of any style. Appearance is inviting, pale and clear with much head. Aroma is tart/sour with citrus and wheat standing out. Nicely balanced, not too sour. Crisp but not over-carbonated, not too light either.
