12 oz. bottle, no bottled on date present. This was just released, so I know it's fresh. A new one to me from Off Color Brewing, this one their Berliner Weisse brewed with yuzu.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - It pours a cloudy lemon body with about a finger of frothy white head that doesn't stay long. Some moderate sticky lacing that cascades back into the glass. Looks good for what it is.

S - Very bright juicy citrusy yuzu / lemon / grapefruit / rind notes, followed by a very prominent grainy, semi-husky, flaked wheat aroma. Elements of white sugar.

T - Taste follows the nose: juicy, citrusy, and tart yuzu fruit. Bright, lemony, & tart, but not overly sour by any means. Wheat and lacto make an appearance. Notes of white sugar. The high citrus gives it sort of a radler-esque taste.

M - The feel is crisp, smooth, clean, and lightly tart. Mildly grainy / yeasty on the finish. Super refreshing and easy-drinking stuff.

Overall, an excellent low abv Berliner from Off Color. An excellent locally brewed example of the style. Would love to have cases of this stuff available for hot summer days.

12oz. bottle into a Surly teku. Shared by schen9303.

Yuzu is apparent in the nose. A sweet citrus covers the lactic presence in the base beer. Good balance with a tart zestiness. Again, the yeastiness smooths over the whole experience. Beer opens with a burst of yuzu sweet and tartness. A bright citrus presence in the middle is followed by a smooth, lactic yeastiness. Very low acidity and great balance. Body is light with ample carbonation. Prickly and lively going down with a soft finish.

Excellent. Comparable to the base beer but the yuzu addition is a nice touch and adds a nice dimension to this one.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy bright golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin spotty cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big tart lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange peel, green apple, wheat, cracker, hay, straw, grass, light funk, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity fruity/acidic yeast, yuzu, and light-moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Very vibrant and fresh smelling. Taste of big tart lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange peel, green apple, wheat, cracker, hay, straw, grass, light pepper/funk, and yeast earthiness. Moderate amount of fruity/acidic tartness and light yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange peel, green apple, hay, straw, light funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, yuzu, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness from acidity and carbonation as well. Medium-high carbonation and light body; with a very smooth, crisp, fairly acidic, and slightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 3.8%. Overall this is an outstanding fruited Berliner weisse style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, yuzu, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Pours a cloudy lemon-yellow of average vibrance, capped by a bone-white head which as soft as it is fluffy, and has a good overall consistency and complexion. Retention is pretty good - about 5 minutes. No yeast can be seen in the body.

Aroma is heavy on the fruit (yes, yuzu) with citrusy esters abound. Lemon zest, clean wheat, clean barley. Sourness is more aggressive than in most Berliner weissbiere, coming in at about a 5/10 in terms of intensity judging by the aroma. It's all lactobacillus-induced, giving it a clean acidity. Aromatic intensity is high for the style, suggesting a loud Berliner weiss that lacks subtlety and isn't as carefully handled as traditional offerings.

Taste follows the aroma, with an unexpected (and off-putting) lemon detergent note...think Dawn. Some might even call it urinal cake. Even without that off-flavour, the yuzu is too pungent for the wheat backbone, making this a loud Berliner weiss with an overbearing fruity core that drowns out the less aggressive lemon zest and clean barley notes, not to mention the complex esters. Sourness is about a 4/10, and is sourced from clean lactobacillus bacteria likely pitched in sterile conditions; this lacks the intricacy and bacterial intangibles of truely spontaneously fermented beers. Imbalanced, with a mediocre build that is neither gestat nor very cohesive.

The mouthfeel is acidic and somewhat refreshing, but has too much body. Smooth, wet, somewhat twangy, and noticeably overcarbonated. This texture doesn't seem dialed in, and never elevates the beer as a whole. The acidity does escalate the fruit presence.

Overall, it's a swing and a miss from Off Color - a brewery I hold in high regard. The premise is a good one, but the execution just isn't there. One of the least drinkable Berliner weissbier style beers I've tried on account of its overzealous flavour profile and its overcarbonation. The discerning drinker is better off sticking to other American offerings in the style, if not traditional German ones served ohne schuss after long-lasting arguments with set-in-their-ways German waitstaff.

12oz bottle poured into an Off Color Brewing cervoise.

The beer pours a pale golden color, hazy but with fair clarity, a decent amount of bubbles rising to the top of the glass where a thin finger of white head sits momentarily before vanishing leaving no film or lace behind. The aroma is pleasant, really tangy, acidic citrus, lemons, limes, mild tangerine, tart wheat, pale biscuit, light funk, very refreshing, like a lemon/lime soda. The flavors are great, very crisp lemon/lime flavor, juniper berry, tart wheat, grapefruit peel, biscuit malt at the finish. The mouthfeel is nice, highly carbonated, prickly feel, medium body that coats well and finishes with a puckery bite.

Verdict: A really nice fruited Berliner Weissbier from Off Color, a great take on their already great beer, Fierce and a good showing of the Yuzu fruit. Loads of crisp citrus that goes from lemon to lime to grapefruit to tangerine with some nice complexity that reads a bit like a gin cocktail, which is no surprise after beers like Eille and many gin inspired beers have come out of Off Color's tanks. This definitely hits the spot for the dog days of summer.

Bottle purchased at Nathaniel Square Corner Store in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a basically clear pale golden, with some orange tints, and a small fizzy head, and no lacing.

Smells really strongly of yuzu, lemon, lime, some slight herbalness, wheat, and some slight crackery malt.

This is a really great berliner. The Yuzu comes through very strongly, with a wonderful wild Sprite like flavor, with yuzu, lemon, and lime flavors. There's some very light funk, almost herbal in character, with some sour wheat, and just a little bit of crackery malt. It's super refreshing and easy to drink, too.

This is light bodied, very crisp and tart in the mouthfeel, with a higher level of carbonation.

One of the best beers I've had from this brewery, really glad I got to try it.

One of the best beers that Off Color has made. Takes the incredible balance of Fierce - perfect blend of tartness, crisp malt, spot on carbonation - and enlivens it with a rounded citrus flavor that tastes completely authentic (the floral, tangerine and less acidic lemon notes of yuzu are well reflected).

Appearance - Pours light yellowish watered down color with thin white head no lacing.

Aroma - Great lemon/lime aroma, light straw with just a touch of funk. It almost smells like a sprite.

Taste - Taste still has the same lemon/lime but with more of an earthy taste. There is still a bit of funk there but also a slight sweet taste.

Feel - Light side of medium bodied well carbonated slightly sticky feel on the back of the mouth at the end.

Overall - I really liked this beer, easy drinking light citrus flavors.

Pours a clear pale straw color. Effervescent with a thin white head. Head dissipated quickly leaving a ring of white foam along the outside of the beer.

Smell has a strong citrus aroma with notes of wheat and a touch of sweetness.

Taste is initially tart, citrus, lemon, giving way to a pleasant tartness. Wheat finish on the back end.

Feel is light, crisp, tart, with mild carbonation.

Overall not a strict traditional berliner with the yuzu added in, but unlike some of the more gimmicky additions, this works really well and compliments the style well.

Thanks to egrace84 for this bottle!

12 fl oz bottle sealed with silver unbranded pressure cap.

poured into HF wine stem.

Appearance: yellow bodied beer with 2 fingers of white head that quickly drops down to a thin cap with a ring around the glass. no lacing on the glass.

Smell: This smells just like 7UP or Sprite. Lots of nicely balanced lemon and lime flavors that are pretty zippy. Light wheat malt profile.

Taste: Light and well balanced lemon and lime citrus presence. Light tartness upfront and a light yogerty funk on the back end. Also tasting some pear and pear skins flavors. An aftertaste that is very reminicent of Sprite.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with low carbonation levels. Semidry finish maybe even a little more than semidry. This occasionally feels slightly heavy or syrupy, but the driness and carb helps to break that up.

Overall: This Yuzu Fierce is just as good as Fierce. It is hard to say which one I like better because its pretty close. I would barely give the advantage to the Yuzu version of Fierce though. Never heard of Yuzu fruit, but it works nicely in this berliner.
