What the hell is this? I expected it to be some kind of Cherry fruit beer sweet refreshing but I got more of an Elixir kind of like an herb spiced molasses tonic which doesn't even seem to be beer. If you can somehow trick your brain to think this taste like Cherry Cola or any kind of cola in that fact you have a bigger imagination than me. I don't think I could even enjoy this with pizza it reminds me of an herbal medical drink one would consume to settle their stomach but with the carbonation that is kind of hard. Unique but I don't think I would recommend it to anyone glad I only grabbed one

It seems I don't like experiments at least half the time... and typically avoid them.
But for Off Color experiments, I seek them out and usually enjoy them... often more for their creativity than content.
I've tasted almost all of OCB's "Beer For" line. I think it interesting that of all the fine saisons Off Color brews (a line, largely derived from Apex cash cow), they logically could've selected a saison for Beer for Pizza and it would have paired well. Instead, OCB choose humor; going back to pizza parties pre-beer days when cola was the only beverage. Such reminiscences are funny; but it is difficult to make a good beer also taste like cola. Yet OCB brewed a cherry cola as well as anyone could be expected to brew and I enjoyed it and pizza as much as I could.
But I have to be honest. The next time I have pizza, it will be paired with a saison from the Apex line.

16 fl oz. can, no date. Surprised to find this lone 4pk at the local Binny's, and of course I had to grab it. I've tried the original but have yet to review it, so I suppose it's been a while. "Malt Beverage with natural flavors added" per the can. Also lists quite the list of "secret natural flavors": Dark sugar syrup, cherry, lime juice, vanilla, lemon zest, orange zest, orange blossom, cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg, citric acid, sucralose". Holy shit.
Poured to a clear stemless wine snifter.
Pours the consistency and color of cola; brown color body with a small finger of tan head that dissipates rather quick. Leaves hardly any lacing, but appears well carbonated.
Immediate big spice rack aromas; super in your face. Cola, licorice root, sassafras, basil, oregano. Super bitter & botanical smelling. I suppose I can find hints of orange zest & vanilla if I really search for them. It's surprisingly pleasant, I can almost get lost in this smell; you can just go on searching for more. Burnt & ashy smelling. Piles of leaves, earthy & outdoorsy.
Here the cherry becomes apparent, as I find it mostly absent in the nose. Initial burst of cherry juice & tart. I can taste the lime and vanilla. Spice rack notes all sort of meld together, but there are nuances of cinnamon and Italian spice blend. Reminds of whiskey bitter or botanical inspired beers I've tried in the past, yet also kind of oud bruin-ish.
Easy-drinking, flavorful, & light. Off Color really knows how to craft unique, inspired beers, I will say that. Each ingredient here lends a unique leg to this creation. No trouble going with solid 4's here again.

Released 9/30/22; drank 10/18/22 @ the Yarchives.
Mostly opaque dark brown/purple appearance.
A violent pour yielded a huge tan head; decent lace.
Cherry Coke, lime, sarsaparilla, mild black licorice & faint Fernet notes in the nose.
Sticky, medium mouthfeel.
Cherry soda, lime, sarsaparilla, faint Fernet & a hint of cinnamon flavors.
A real cherry soda experience, but with enough more interesting twists to make it worthwhile. A little goes a long way, but it's a fun one!

insane how much this actually tastes like cherry cola, like its downright remarkable, and thankfully we had it with pizza this time, which i didnt get to experience with the original. some who shared this thought the cherry was wrong, like its a tart cherry but needs to be a black cherry or something, for me, who is not a soda drinker at all, it was spot on. i love the complexity of the base beer underneath the fruit, its fun to try to taste all the things in it, but its so cohesive and good, shockingly not that sweet, and the cherry does add a lot, its definitely the lead flavor in this version. curious enough i also taste dr pepper in this. the cherry pics up cocoa and vanilla notes, i still taste lime and rum and brown sugar, and the effervescence of this is insane, it fits the flavors perfectly and makes this very much like a cola. not sure it needs pizza or even is that great of a pairing, to me this is interesting and dynamic enough to stand on its own and the food seemed like an unnecessary distraction. impressive what they did here, whether you like soda or not, its incredibly well executed, almost impossibly so, and its a really cool beer in their lineup, every bit as fun and distinct as the original, highly recommended because there is nothing else at all that tastes like this in the beer world!
